The Vulcans also secured the program's 18th-consecutive winning season, which is the longest active streak in the PSAC. Meanwhile, ESU closes the year with a 4-7 mark under head coach Jimmy Terwilliger – the winner of the 2005 Harlon Hill Trophy.

ESU threatened to take the lead on the opening drive of the game before a 35-yard field goal missed wide left. The Vulcans then mounted an 80-yard scoring drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown run by sophomore Eric McKan III (Washington, D.C./Bullis (Md.)) with 7:02 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing drive, the Warriors advanced to the red zone for a consecutive drive before Tobey registered a strip sack with the ball being recovered by Brown who then raced 72 yards for the defensive touchdown to stretch the lead to 14-0 with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Late in the quarter, senior linebacker Gabe Miller (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) registered an interception near midfield. Cal then extended the lead to 21-7 on a 13-yard touchdown run by McKan with 1:24 left before halftime.
