WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team closed its season series against Walsh with a 5-2 loss at Wild Things Park on Monday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-3 this season after dropping two of three games to the Cavaliers. Meanwhile, Walsh starts the year with a 2-1 record.
Walsh jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo homer by leadoff hitter Joey Holiga, who finished the series with a staggering 2.198 OPS+. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with one out in the third before a pop-up down right-field line and a strikeout ended the inning.
In the fifth, Walsh added to its lead with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a two-run double with one out before Cal U forced the Cavaliers to strand runners on second and third. Junior second baseman
Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) started the bottom of the sixth with a double before later scoring on a ground-out, 4-1. The Vulcans again trimmed the deficit in the seventh with junior shortstop
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) lining a double to right-center before scoring on a two-out single by senior first baseman
Josh Rankin (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon).
Walsh answered with a two-out RBI triple in the eighth to stretch the lead to 5-2.
Venezia reached base in all three plate appearances (two hits, hit by pitch) and added one run scored and one stolen base. McCaskey also collected a pair of hits in the contest to raise his team-leading batting average to .391 this spring.
Junior starter
Zach Rohaley (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks in 5.0 innings (90 pitches). Freshman
Jackson Miller (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief without allowing a hit, while junior
Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) worked 2.0 innings in his fifth relief appearance of the season.
Walsh starter Brant Alazaus earned the victory after yielding one run (earned) on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in 6.0 innings (87 pitches). Sophomore Josh Ferry registered the save after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they host a non-conference contest against Clarion at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.
