INDIANA, Pa. (March 20) – The Vulcans scored a combined 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Saturday afternoon while earning an 18-3 victory at IUP in non-conference play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 7-3 overall while playing its first road game of the year on Saturday. Meanwhile, IUP suffered its sixth-consecutive loss to fall to 1-6 this season.
Junior shortstop
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) set a career high with six RBI and finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and one run scored. Junior right fielder
Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, three runs scored and three walks, while freshman designated hitter
Jax Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, four runs scored and two walks. Junior second baseman
Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and senior first baseman
Josh Rankin (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) both scored three times in the victory.
The Vulcans scored their initial run of the game on a two-out error in the first before sophomore center fielder
Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) posted an RBI single in the top of the second. McCaskey added to the lead with an RBI double in the third, 3-0.
In the fifth, McCaskey lined a two-run single up the middle before a pair of runs scored on a passed ball. The Vulcans later loaded the bases on walks before scoring again on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, Miller reached on a two-base error with two outs that cleared the bases and extended the lead to 11-1.
Cal U again batted around in the sixth inning with Miller posting an RBI single and McCaskey tallying a three-run double. The Vulcans scored their final run of the game in the top of the ninth when Brogan belted a solo homer, his third of the year.
Senior
Nick Riggle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) improved to 3-0 this season after allowing one run (earned) on five hits while posting four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Junior
Zach Rohaley (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded the save after tossing 4.0 innings of relief, yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits. IUP starter Ben Hudock suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks in 4.0-plus innings.
The Vulcans continue their weekend series with the Crimson Hawks tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, with a non-conference contest at Wild Things Park, beginning at 1 p.m.
