CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11) – Junior catcher
Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) belted a pair of homers on Wednesday, as the Vulcans claimed a split at the PFX Spring Games with a 2-0 win over St. Cloud State (Minn.) and a 5-2 loss against Sioux Falls (S.D.).
With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team moves to 4-10 this season behind a 3-5 mark at the PFX Spring Games in Florida.
Against St. Cloud State (12-7), Wilson delivered a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and freshman
Ellie Lobdell (Warren, Pa./Warren) recorded her first career complete-game shutout. Lobdell improved to 2-3 this season after scattering four hits and zero walks over 7.0 innings while setting a season high with nine strikeouts.
The Vulcans threatened in the top of first with singles by sophomore right fielder
Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) and freshman second baseman
Kira Hillhouse (Erie, Pa./McDowell) before a ground-out ended the inning. Hillhouse reached on an error to leadoff the fourth and later advanced to third on a single by freshman first baseman
Kierra Waywood (Yukon, Pa./Yough) and a sacrifice bunt before a ground-out again halted the threat.
Wilson delivered the only runs of the game on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth after sophomore third baseman
Kaitlyn Corle (Hopewell, Pa./Northern Bedford) started the inning with a single. Lobdell retired eight-straight batters before the Huskies had runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth following back-to-back singles. However, Lobdell responded with a pop-up and strikeout to preserve the shutout.
St. Cloud State opened the bottom of the seventh with a double before Lobdell tallied back-to-back strikeouts before a fly-out ended the game.
Against Sioux Falls (9-6), junior starter
Hannah Clunk (New Cumberland, W.Va./Oak Glen) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on two hits in 1.2 innings. Waywood worked a season-high 5.1 innings of relief and yielded two runs (both earned) on seven hits and recorded six strikeouts.
The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a three-run homer by center fielder Frankie Mickelson before Waywood entered the circle. Sioux Falls added to the lead with a two-run single with two outs in the fourth before junior shortstop
Alexa Pastor (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning, 5-1.
Wilson led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer, her third of the year, before Sioux Falls made a pitching change. In the sixth, the Cougars posted back-to-back singles with two outs before Waywood ended the inning with a strikeout.
