CALIFORNIA (Sept. 28) – For a consecutive day, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team completed a 3-2 comeback victory over West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Vulcans extend their winning streak to six-straight matches and improve to 7-3 overall behind a 2-0 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams drop to 12-3 this season with a 0-2 mark in league action after opening the year with 12-straight victories.
Freshman
Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) paced the team with 17 kills behind a .326 hitting percentage and added 10 digs. She has logged a kill/dig double-double in four-consecutive matches and leads the team with 3.20 kills per set this season. Sophomore
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) finished with 14 kills and a team-leading 19 digs, while classmate
Tyana Quivers (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) tallied a career-high nine kills on 19 attacks against the Golden Rams. Classmate
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) guided the offense with 44 assists and totaled 10 digs in the win.

Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) registered 14 digs and freshman
Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) collected 11 digs in the match. The Vulcans also recorded a season-high 16 aces, which are the most since the program notched 20 aces at Cheyney in 2017. Sophomore
Shelby Alloway (Hardin Northern/Dunkirk, Ohio) set a career high with seven service aces and Moehring added four aces on Saturday.
In the fifth set, Cal U established an early 7-0 advantage behind four service aces from Moehring before the Golden Rams scored four of the next six points to cut the deficit to 9-4. The Vulcans later rallied off a 6-1 run, including three kills by Moehring, to secure the match win with a 15-5 victory in the set.
Cal U started the match with a 25-20 win in the first set after tallying 12 kills on a .212 clip. West Chester grabbed an early 5-3 advantage before the Vulcans responded with six-consecutive points to take a 9-5 advantage. The Golden Rams tied the score at 9-9 before Cal U used a 7-1 run to regain a 16-10 lead and force a timeout by West Chester. The Golden Rams rallied back again to trim the deficit to 20-18 before the Vulcans countered with four-straight points, 24-18. Cal U would win the first set by a 25-20 margin following a block assist from junior
Madison Kline (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) and Quivers.
West Chester tied the match with a 25-22 victory in the second set, as both teams hit over a .280 clip. The Vulcans raced out to an 8-2 advantage before the Golden Rams collected seven of the next eight points to take a 10-9 lead. Both teams traded points late in the set, but West Chester seized the advantage on a 6-1 run to hold a 23-20 lead. Cal U closed the gap with back-to-back points before a service error by the Vulcans and an ace claimed the set for the Golden Rams, 25-22.
In the third set, West Chester would take a 2-1 match advantage with a 25-20 win after totaling 15 kills on a .412 hitting percentage. The Golden Rams collected the initial four points of the set before Cal U tied the match at 6-6 following a kill from Moehring. West Chester notched six of the next eight points to take a 12-8 lead, but the Vulcans countered again to knot the contest at 13-13. Later in the set, the Golden Rams earned four-straight points to take an 18-14 advantage before the Vulcans answered with a pair of kills. West Chester used a 7-4 run, including five kills, to seal the 25-20 victory in the set.
Cal U dominated the fourth set by a 25-10 margin after hitting at a .387 clip and holding the Golden Rams to just three kills. The Vulcans jumped out to an 8-2 lead, including a 5-0 run to begin the set. A service error halted the run, but Cal U responded with four-consecutive points to take a 13-3 advantage. The teams exchanged the next 12 points before a 7-0 run by Cal U sealed the win in fourth set, 25-10.
The Vulcans return to PSAC Crossover action on Friday, Oct. 4, when they travel to face league-newcomer Shepherd at 7 p.m.
