Softball closes year with split at Seton Hill

Wilson delivers game-winning RBI single in extra innings; Vulcans finish fourth in West standings

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 28) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team finished the season with a split of a doubleheader at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 1-0 loss in Game 1 before claiming a 3-2 extra-inning victory in Game 2.

With the split, the Vulcans close the year with a 14-22 overall record and finish fourth in the divisional standings with a 10-10 mark. Cal U entered the last day of the regular season in contention for the PSAC Tournament, but ultimately finished two games back of the final playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 28-16 this season behind a 13-7 mark in league play and enter the league tournament as the second seed from the PSAC West.

In Game 2, Cal U held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh before Seton Hill tied the contest with a pair of two-out hits. The Vulcans capitalized on a two-out fielding error in the ninth that allowed freshman second baseman Kaitlyn Corle (Hopewell, Pa./Northern Bedford) to reach base safely. Corle advanced into scoring position on a stolen base before sophomore catcher Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) lined an RBI single into center field, 3-2.

Senior Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) earned the complete-game victory on Sunday, allowing two runs (both earned) on 11 hits and three walks over 9.0 innings (152 pitches). She finished the year as the team's leader with 10 wins, a 1.75 ERA and 108.0 innings pitched, while setting career highs in virtually every pitching category. Seton Hill starter Skyla Greco (11-9) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks in 9.0 innings (129 pitches).

The Griffins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before loading the bases with one out in the third. Robblee then induced a pair of pop-ups to end the inning and prevent any runs from scoring. Seton Hill again threatened in the fourth with runner on first and second with one out before Robblee fielded a comebacker and recorded an out at third. The final out of the inning occurred when the trail runner was hit by a ball between first and second off the bat of right fielder Jenna Osikowicz.

In the top of the fifth, Cal U tied the score when designated player Carly Konopka (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led off the inning with a homer – her second of the year. Wilson later delivered an RBI single to score senior center fielder Abby Sachse (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton) from second and advanced to second on the throw. Robblee then drew a walk before the inning ended with a strikeout. Seton Hill looked to answer in the bottom of the inning after back-to-back walks with two outs loaded the bases. However, Robblee escaped the inning without allowing a run by inducing a ground-out to the shortstop.

The Vulcans threatened to increase the lead in the sixth, as Konopka drew a two-out walk and sophomore shortstop Alexa Pastor (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) followed with a single. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before a fly-out halted the inning. In the seventh, Seton Hill tied the contest at 2-2 when pinch runner Raelyn McGarry scored from second on a two-out single by left fielder Nichole McClendon.

Both teams threatened with a runner in scoring position in the eighth before Cal U reclaimed the lead in the ninth. After the Vulcans scored the go-ahead run, Seton Hill catcher Chelsea Rohan reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the inning before Cal U turned a double play to seal the victory in the final game of the season.

Wilson finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, as she finished the year with a .381 average behind 14 multi-hit games. Pastor also tallied a pair of hits in the victory on Sunday.

In Game 1, Cal U was no-hit for the second time this season after previously not being no-hit since March 2009. Seton Hill senior Devyn Terry issued three walks and tallied five strikeouts over 7.0 no-hit innings (76 pitches). Senior Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run (earned) on six hits with no walks over 6.0 innings (95 pitches).

Terry issued a leadoff walk to Wilson to start the game before retiring 11-consecutive batters. Konopka drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before the next two batters were retired in order.

The Griffins scored the lone run of the contest in the fifth by tallying three-straight hits off Downing. Seton Hill again threatened with a two-out double in the sixth before a ground-out ended the inning. The Vulcans advanced a runner into scoring position in the top of the seventh with a walk and passed ball before consecutive strikeouts ended the game.
