Vulcans close year with loss at Clarion, 90-78

MacAdams posts sixth double-double; Pegram finishes 18th on school's single-season scoring list

CLARION, Pa. (March 2) – Despite freshman Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) tying his career high of 29 points and posting a double-double, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team concluded the season with a 90-78 loss at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans finish the year 8-19 overall with a 6-15 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 6-20 this year to close the regular season with a 4-17 record in conference action.
 
MacAdams posted his sixth double-double of the season and led the team with 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting. He totaled 12 rebounds (four offensive) while playing all 40 minutes. The 6-foot-5 forward concluded the season with an average of 14.9 points per game and paced the team with 8.1 rebounds per game.
 
Sophomore Brent Pegram registered 19 points, three rebounds and five assists in 39 minutes of action. He finished the season with 10 20-point games while leading the team with 18.5 points, 4.2 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Pegram also totaled 499 points during the 2018-19 campaign, which ranks 18th all-time in a single-season at Cal U and is the most in over a decade.
 
Freshman Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) scored 17 points on 8-of-18 attempts against the Golden Eagles. He added seven rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes. The Virginia native ranked second on the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game and recorded five 20-point contests this year.
 
Redshirt junior Donte' Williams (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) finished with eight points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 32 minutes on Saturday.
 
Clarion established an early 10-5 lead after converting four-of-four from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Cal U tied the game at 10-10 after five-straight points before the Golden Eagles used a 9-4 run to take a 19-14 advantage with 11:39 remaining in the first half. The Vulcans responded with six-unanswered points to take a 20-19 lead before Clarion reclaimed the lead at 26-22 at the 7:53-mark. Both teams would struggle from the field, as the Golden Eagles converted the only field goal over a two-minute span. The contest would be tied two separate times down the stretch of the first half before Clarion answered with a 14-5 rally to take a 44-35 advantage into the break.
 
MacAdams scored the initial four points to begin the second half before the Golden Eagles went on an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 55-43 after knocking down five-of-eight shots. Cal U countered with seven-consecutive points, led by Pegram with four points, to trim the deficit to 55-50 with 13:47 left in regulation. The Vulcans closed the gap to one possession after a three-pointer from MacAdams and a layup by Collins, but the Golden Eagles once again stretched the lead after making four-of-five shots to take a 67-59 advantage. Cal U converted its next four shots over nearly two minutes to close the gap to 70-69 before Clarion went on a 15-4 run to extend the lead to 85-73 with 2:24 left. Both teams traded points down the stretch, as the Golden Eagles secured a 90-78 victory.
 
Cal U finished the game with a .464 field-goal percentage (32-of-69) and made just 5-of-21 attempts (23.8 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, Clarion shot 52.9 percent (37-of-70) from the field and shot only six free-throws the entire game. The Golden Eagles held a 42-33 rebounding advantage and totaled 21 assists, while the Vulcans forced 15 turnovers.
 
Junior Lawrence Lemon posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, plus three assists and two blocks, in 36 minutes. Sophomore Khari Williams totaled 18 points, four rebounds, three assists in 38 minutes. Junior Elijah Cottrill and Brandon Williams scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, in the win.
