GLENVILLE, W.Va. (March 16) – The fourth-seeded Vulcans held the nation's leading scoring offense to a season low in points to earn an 87-77 overtime win at top-seeded and host Glenville State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night at the Waco Center.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 26-5 this season and advances to face third-seeded IUP in the regional final on Monday, March 18, at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Glenville State finishes the year a 30-3 overall record following a second-straight MEC Championship. The loss also snaps a 38-game winning streak for the Pioneers at the Waco Center.

Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) nearly recorded a triple-double while setting a career high with 25 points (16 first half) on 8-of-14 shooting and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also established a career high with nine steals on Saturday and added eight rebounds and four assists while playing 42 minutes. Sporio is now averaging 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.0 steals over the last 11 games.
Sophomore
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) tied career highs of 20 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Redshirt senior
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals after playing sparingly in the first half due to foul trouble. Freshman
Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) scored 11 points on four-of-four from the field and three-of-four from the free-throw line in 19 minutes off the bench. Junior
Gina Vallecorsa (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) added 10 points, five rebounds and two steals while playing 43 minutes on Saturday.
Glenville State junior standout Emily Stoller drilled a deep three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the score at 72-72 with 30.1 seconds left in regulation. The Vulcans were unable to break the tie on the final possession of the fourth quarter, missing a runner and a last-second jumper in traffic, to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Cal U scored six-straight points to take an 80-74 lead with 2:14 left to play while Glenville State missed three-straight shots and committed a turnover during the stretch. Stoller answered with another three-pointer at the 1:29-mark before Jasper and Sporio each made a pair of free-throws to stretch the lead to 84-77 with 1:04 remaining. The Pioneers then missed three-straight shots from beyond the arc on the same possession before Jasper made the second of two free-throws with 40 seconds left. Glenville State missed another three-pointer on the ensuing possession and committed a turnover after collecting the offensive rebound. Barrett then sealed the victory with a pair of free-throws with 29 seconds remaining.
Stoller, an All-MEC First-Team selection, led the Pioneers with 17 points after going 4-of-13 from beyond the arc. Freshman Zakiyah Winfield finished with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while junior Ty Armstrong added 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out in 28 minutes.
The Pioneers scored a three-pointer on their opening possession of the game before the Vulcans answered with 10-consecutive points to take a 10-3 lead at the 6:24-mark. Glenville State countered with six-unanswered points to claim an 11-8 lead before Cal U snapped a three-minute scoreless drought on a three-point play by Sporio with 3:38 left in the quarter. The teams traded free-throws over the next minute before the Vulcans scored six-straight points to take a 23-15 lead at the 1:10-mark. Glenville State scored in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to 23-18 at the end of the quarter. Sporio scored 11 points in the first quarter and Cal U attempted 13 free-throws after Glenville State was whistled for 11 fouls.
Glenville State trimmed the deficit to 25-23 on back-to-back baskets and held Cal U scoreless for over three minutes. The Vulcans then answered with nine-straight points in under 90 seconds to take a 34-23 lead with 4:39 left in the second quarter. Glenville State snapped a three-minute scoreless drought of its own at the 3:20-mark and later scored six of the last eight points in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 40-33 at halftime. Sporio finished with 16 points in the first half, while six different Pioneers were whistled for multiple fouls before the break.
Early in the third quarter, Jasper accounted for all six points for the Vulcans during a 6-2 run to take a 46-37 lead at the 6:34-mark. Glenville State countered with a 7-2 rally to cut the deficit to four points, 48-44, before Jasper responded with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession with 3:33 left in the quarter. The Vulcans stretched the lead to 10 points before the Pioneers made a three-pointer in the closing seconds to trim the deficit to 57-49 at the end of the third quarter.
The Pioneers opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run to make it a single-possession contest at 61-57 with 7:03 remaining. Cal U responded with a 5-2 rally to take a 64-59 lead with 5:13 left to play. The Pioneers answered with seven-unanswered points to take 66-64 lead at the 3:18-mark before the Vulcans countered with six-straight points to reclaim the lead at 70-66 with 44 seconds remaining. Glenville State then cut the deficit to 70-69 on a three-point play by Stoller and later tied the score at 72-72 on a deep three-pointer by Stoller with 30.1 seconds left.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 40.0 percent (26-of-65) from the floor and made 34-of-49 (69.4 percent) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Pioneers made 38.0 percent (30-of-79) from the field while shooting 12-of-40 (30.0 percent) from beyond the arc and attempted just five free-throws. Glenville State held a slim 48-46 rebounding advantage, while Cal U scored 24 points off turnovers.
Cal U continues play in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, March 18, when it faces IUP for the Atlantic Regional Championship in Glenville, West Virginia, at 7 p.m. The Crimson Hawks, which won the regional title last season, advanced to the regional final on Saturday with a 66-58 victory against Virginia Union.
