Valeriano reaches 50 saves for the season; Rock posts 12-5 shot advantage in the win

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Oct. 30) – The Vulcans played to a scoreless first half on Wednesday afternoon before dropping a 1-0 contest at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 3-6-3 overall with a 1-3-3 record in league play. Meanwhile, The Rock extends its win streak to three games and improves to 7-6-2 this season behind a 4-3 mark in divisional action.

The Vulcans attempted a shot in the opening 90 seconds before The Rock later followed with a pair of shot attempts and corner kicks within a span of a minute. Midway through the first half, freshman Evan Blunkosky (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and senior Marcos Garcia, Jr. (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) both placed a shots on target that were saved by the Slippery Rock goalkeeper. The Rock pressured the net with a pair of shots in the final minutes of the first half.

Early in the second half, Slippery Rock attempted three shots before recording back-to-back corner kicks. The Rock scored the lone goal of the contest at the 59:29-mark when Mo Kanani scored his third goal of the year off a feed from Brian McCarthy. Later in the half, senior goalkeeper Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) posted a pair of saves within a span of five minutes to keep it a one-goal contest. The Vulcans made a final attempt to even the score in 88th minute with a shot on target by freshman Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) following a corner kick.

Valeriano finished with four saves on Wednesday to eclipse 50 saves for the first time in his career.

The Rock posted a 12-5 shot advantage in the contest and also tallied a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when it travels to face Pitt-Johnstown at 2:30 p.m.
