Vulcans dealt loss at East Stroudsburg, 3-0

Slibaugh led all players with 19 digs; Cal U has six matches remaining on eight-game road trip

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 18) – After committing 27 attacking errors, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-11, 25-22) at East Stroudsburg on Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 9-7 overall with a 4-4 record in conference play and have lost their initial five road matches this season. Meanwhile, the Warriors extend their winning streak to five-straight matches and improve to 17-4 this season behind an 8-1 mark in league action.
 
Freshman Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) paced the team with nine kills and added nine digs, while junior Madeleine McKenna (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) registered seven kills. Sophomore Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) posted six kills and 11 digs against the Warriors. The offense was guided by sophomores Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) with each totaling 12 assists on Friday.
 
Junior libero Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) led all players with 19 digs and was one of two Cal U players with double-digit digs. Junior Madison Kline (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) defended the net with three blocks, her sixth match this year with at least three blocks.
 
East Stroudsburg established a 1-0 lead to begin the match after taking the first set by 25-16 margin. The Warriors raced out to an 8-1 advantage to start the set before the Vulcans responded with back-to-back points. Cal U would cut the deficit to 10-6 after three different players recorded a kill before ESU went on an 8-3 run to extend its lead to 18-9. The Vulcans answered with three-consecutive points, including a pair of kills from Burkey, before the Warriors countered with four-unanswered points, 22-12. Cal U closed the gap to 23-16 before East Stroudsburg claimed the first set with back-to-back points, 25-16.
 
In the second set, the Warriors took a 2-0 advantage after totaling nine kills on a .276 hitting percentage to win the set, 25-11. ESU mounted a 14-4 lead, including a 6-0 run, before the run was halted by a service error. East Stroudsburg then scored three-consecutive points to stretch the lead to 17-5 before the Vulcans collected four of the next six points to trim the deficit to 19-9. The teams would exchange the next four points before the Warriors recorded four-unanswered points to take the second set by a 25-11 margin.
 
ESU completed the 3-0 sweep after the third set featured four ties and three lead changes. The Warriors built a 6-1 lead before Cal U answered with three of the next four points to cut the deficit to 7-4. East Stroudsburg then tallied three-straight points before the Vulcans went on a 4-0 run to close the gap to 10-8. The teams would trade the next seven points before ESU registered a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 18-13. Cal U scored seven of the next nine points to tie the match at 20-20 before the Warriors used a 5-2 run to secure the set, 25-22.
 
The Vulcans continue PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to face Kutztown at 1 p.m.
