CALIFORNIA (Feb. 21) – After shooting under 33 percent in the second half, the Vulcans fell 84-64 versus Seton Hill on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team drops to 10-17 overall behind a 6-15 mark in league action. With one game remaining, Cal U has an opportunity to get over the 10-win threshold for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 10-17 on the season with a 6-15 record in conference play.
Senior
Isaiah Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) registered a team-high 15 points on 7-of-13 attempts and collected three rebounds in 30 minutes. A New York native, Lewis has led the team scoring nine times this season and remains the team leader in scoring with 16.8 points per game. Freshman
Philip Alexander (Laurel, Md./Mt. Zion Prep) scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added three rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. He notched his eighth game in double-figures while serving primarily as a reserve.
Junior
Jahmere Howze (Cleveland, Ohio/Warrensville Heights) tallied 10 points on 5-of-10 attempts and collected two rebounds on Wednesday, while senior
Terry Davis, Jr. (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes off the bench against the Griffins.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the opening three-plus minutes before back-to-back points in the paint by Howze gave Cal U an 11-8 advantage. The Griffins responded with an 11-5 run after converting four-of-six attempts and holding the Vulcans to one field goal to retake the lead at 21-18 with 12:16 left in the first half. The team traded points over the next three minutes before Davis scored three-straight points to put the Vulcans up 29-27. Lewis scored on back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead until Seton Hill reclaimed the lead at 37-36 with 2:27 remaining in the half. Cal U once again captured the lead on a three-pointer by Lewis before the Griffins registered five-unanswered points to take a 42-39 lead in the break.
Seton Hill quickly established a double-figure lead in the second half with an 11-2 rally to take a 53-41 advantage with 15:52 remaining. During the run, the Griffins hit 50 percent of their shots, while the Vulcans were held to one-of-six shooting and forced into three turnovers. Cal U cut the deficit down to single-digits after making four-of-five attempts, but Seton Hill countered with 10-unanswered points in two-plus minutes. The Griffins lead by as many as 24 points in the second half with 5:34 left before securing the 84-64 win.
Cal U posted a .472 field-goal percentage in the first half before finishing the contest 28-of-70 (40.0 percent) from the floor. Meanwhile, Seton Hill converted 53.0 percent (35-of-66) from the field and made 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from the free-throw line. The Vulcans held a 39-36 rebounding advantage and totaled 23 points off the bench, while the Griffins recorded 48 points in the paint.
Junior guard Trevor Blondin scored a game-high 29 points on 12-of-22 attempts and collected two rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes. Redshirt senior Spencer Casson posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds (four offensive) in 35 minutes. He shot 9-of-11 and added two assists and six blocks in the win. Sophomore Nathan Davis finished with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting and collected six rebounds and two assists, while teammate Milenko Predic recorded 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, when it hosts Senior Day versus Clarion at the Convocation Center with tipoff at 3 p.m.
