CALIFORNIA (Dec. 18) – Sophomore
Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) set a career high with 31 points on Tuesday afternoon, as the Vulcans featured five players in double-figures in a 102-70 victory over Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 3-6 overall with a 1-2 mark in league action. The Vulcans recorded their first game with at least 100 points since defeating Glenville State by a 105-94 margin on the opening weekend of the 2017-18 season. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 3-5 this season behind a 1-3 record in conference play.
Pegram led all players with 31 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including five three-pointers, and made eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. He matched a career high with eight assists and added five steals in 39 minutes of action. Pegram has tallied double-digit points and eight assists in three of his last four games.
Freshman
Jermaine Hall, Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Severn School) posted his third double-double of the season after totaling 18 points on 7-of-12 attempts, including three from beyond the arc. He added 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals while playing 31 minutes versus the Huskies. Redshirt junior
Donte' Williams (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) scored a season-high 19 points on six-of-eight shots and made five-of-five from the charity stripe. He notched seven rebounds and two assists in his home debut.
Freshman
Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 37 minutes, while classmate
Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted 10 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
The Vulcans opened the contest on a 13-0 run after making five of their initial six shots, including a pair from long range. Cal U built its lead to 21-7 at the 11:32-mark after both teams exchanged buckets, while the Vulcans knocked down three shots and forced three turnovers. The teams continued to trade baskets past the midway point of the first half before Pegram scored five-unanswered points to take a 37-17 advantage with 6:14 remaining. Bloomsburg responded by scoring six of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 41-25 before Hall tallied five-straight points to extend the lead. The teams exchanged the next five shots before Cal U tallied four more points to close to the half with a 55-33 lead at the break.
The Huskies knocked down the initial two shots in the second half before Williams scored five-consecutive points for the Vulcans to stretch the lead to 58-37 at the 17:05-mark. Pegram followed up with seven-unanswered points in a nearly two-minute span before Cal U mounted a 14-4 run. During the stretch, the Vulcans shot five-of-eight from the floor and tallied four steals to take an 81-49 lead with 10:09 remaining in the game. Both teams traded shots over the six-plus minutes before the Vulcans closed the contest with a 12-4 rally to secure a 102-70 victory.
The Vulcans shot a season-high 59.0 percent (36-of-61) from the floor while converting 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Huskies finished the game with a .397 field-goal percentage (31-of-78) and made just 3-of-25 (12.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Both teams tallied 39 rebounds in the contest, while Cal U scored 40 points in the paint and made 17-of-19 free-throws.
Sophomore Ethan Houston posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Junior Ky Mauras scored 16 points and added three rebounds and four steals, while freshman Travis Elmore finished with 14 points and three rebounds.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 19, when they host defending-league and region champion East Stroudsburg in PSAC Crossover play, starting at 7:30 p.m.
