CALIFORNIA (Nov. 3) – In a regionally-ranked contest on the final day of the regular season, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss (25-22, 33-35, 25-23, 25-17) versus Clarion on Senior Day in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest action at the Convocation Center.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 19-11 this season behind a 12-6 record in league play. Cal U secured the fifth seed in the PSAC Tournament and will travel to Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 21-10 overall with a 12-6 mark in conference action. Clarion earned the sixth seed following today's action and will travel to Seton Hill on Tuesday.
Freshman
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) posted her team-leading 14th kill/dig double-double with 13 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Senior
Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) totaled 12 kills and a season-high 16 digs, her third kill/dig double-double of the year. Junior
Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) registered her 12th kill/dig double-double of the season with 10 kills and 23 digs, while senior
Tina Bellhy (McDonald,Pa./Fort Cherry) also tallied 10 kills. Freshman
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense 45 assists and 14 digs for her 11th assist/dig double-double this year.
Priore posted a team-best 23 digs, while Moehring added 21 digs against the Golden Eagles. Sophomore
Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) recorded 18 digs and van Schaik added 16 digs on Saturday. Bellhy controlled the net with seven blocks, while Benson and Priore both notched three blocks.
Clarion established a 9-3 lead in the first set following an 8-0 run before Cal U closed the gap by scoring six of the next seven points, 10-9. Following a Golden Eagle timeout, the Vulcans tied the match at 14-14 before scoring five of the next eight points to take a 19-17 advantage. Clarion reclaimed the lead after a 5-1 run and forced Cal U to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles secured a 25-23 win after tallying three of the final five points in the first set.
The second set featured 18 ties and a combined 68 points, as Cal U claimed a 35-33 victory. Clarion built a 10-7 lead and scored three of the next five points to take a 13-9 advantage. Following a Vulcan timeout, Cal U used a 7-3 run to tie the match at 16-16 before reclaiming the lead by tallying five of the next seven points to take a 21-18 lead. Clarion countered with five-straight points before Cal U totaled back-to-back points to tie the contest at 23-23. The match would tie eight more times down the stretch before the Vulcans scored three-straight points to seal the second set on back-to-back kills from Moehring, 35-33.
The Golden Eagles took a 10-4 advantage in the third set until the Vulcans trimmed the deficit with four-unanswered points, 10-8. The teams exchanged the next nine points, while Clarion continued to hold a 17-13 lead. Cal U responded with five-consecutive points to close the gap to an 18-17 advantage before Clarion scored six of the next nine points to reclaim the lead at 23-21. The Vulcans registered consecutive points to tie the match at 23-23 before the Golden Eagles won the third set on back-to-back attacking errors, 25-23.
Clarion claimed the match victory with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. The Golden Eagles took a 9-4 lead before extending the lead on a 6-3 run. The Vulcans trimmed the deficit with three-straight points to 15-10 before the teams traded the next eight points, 19-14. Following a Clarion timeout, the Golden Eagles built the lead to 23-16 on consecutive kills before scoring two of the next three points to win the match by a 25-17 count in the fourth set.
Cal U begins play in the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday, when it travels to fourth-seeded Pitt-Johnstown at 7 p.m.
