NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium for Homecoming on Saturday. The Vulcans extended their winning streak to four games with a 41-27 victory at Clarion last week. Meanwhile, Gannon snapped a five-game losing streak with a 48-28 win over Seton Hill.

• Cal U scored 28 first-half points while battling a nearly two-hour lightning delay before earning a 41-27 win at Clarion. Freshman quarterback Noah Mitchell finished with 195 passing yards and three first-half touchdowns. Junior defensive back Lamont McPhatter II led the team with a season-high 10 tackles and recorded one interception, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. The Vulcans set a season high with 7.0 sacks, including 2.0 by freshman defensive lineman Derick Korboi. Junior linebacker Breon Coke added seven tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack and one interception.

• The Vulcans have won each of the nine all-time meetings against the Golden Knights. The two programs never faced until Gannon joined the PSAC in 2008.

• A 12-year veteran of the program, Brad Rzyczycki is in his seventh season as head coach at Gannon. He has posted a 35-37 overall record with the Golden Knights and led the program to a share of the PSAC West title in 2014, while tying the school record for wins in a season. Rzyczycki served as the defensive coordinator at Gannon for five years before being appointed head coach in 2012.

• With its win last week, Gannon snapped a five-game losing streak to open the year. The Golden Knights are once again anchored by senior running back Marcus Jones, who set the school's all-time record for rushing yards last week. He finished as runner-up for the 2017 Harlon Hill Trophy after leading the country with 2,176 rushing yards and 31 total touchdowns. Jones leads the PSAC and ranks seventh in the nation this fall with 712 rushing yards. Sophomore quarterback Jason Dambach has started the last two games after passing for 270 yards off the bench on Sept. 22. Junior wide receiver Joey Cox leads the team with 31 receptions and 309 yards after totaling just eight catches last year. Classmate Dontae Owens has totaled over 200 receiving yards over the past three games. The Golden Knights rank in the middle of the PSAC in virtually every defensive category in 2018. Senior defensive back Martell Davis leads the team with 45 tackles and 6.0 TFL, plus has registered an interception in each of the last two weeks. Fellow senior defensive back James Simms sits second on the team with 33 tackles, including 12 stops last week. Sophomore Tre McNeill ranks third on the team with 27 tackles despite not playing last week and has recorded a pair of fumble recoveries. Senior Jarod Morrison returns as the team's punter, averaging 41.8 yards per punt with eight punts of at least 50 yards. A true freshman, kicker Brian Strybel has converted just two-of-seven field goals with three attempts resulting in a block.

• Junior defensive back Lamont McPhatter II again recorded multiple takeaways last week in the win at Clarion. He now has posted five interceptions and two fumble recoveries, plus scored two touchdowns, over the past four weeks. He has registered an interception in four-consecutive games this year after being the first player in recent program history to accomplish the feat in 2017.

• Last week, Cal U converted 10-of-15 third downs in the victory at Clarion after entering the game as the NCAA Division II leader in the category. The Vulcans are now tied with UCF for second among all NCAA divisions (667 schools) with a .591 third-down conversion percentage. NC State leads the entire country with a .609 mark on third downs. Cal U has converted double-digit third downs twice this year.

• After the third week of divisional play, both the Western and Eastern Divisions in the PSAC have only two teams with undefeated league records. The two remaining unbeaten teams from both divisions will play each other in two weeks, Oct. 27, with West Chester-Kutztown being selected as an NCAA Showcase Game.

• The Vulcans registered 7.0 sacks last week with six players tallying at least 0.5 sack. It marked the most sacks in game since Week 3 of the 2016 season. Freshman Derick Korboi led the team with 2.0 sacks and classmate Gerald Brown added 1.5 sacks at Clarion. Cal U ranks in the middle of the PSAC this season with 13.0 sacks with Brown leading the team with 2.5 sacks.

• The Vulcans host Gannon for Homecoming on Saturday for the second time in three years. Cal U has won each of its last 13 Homecoming games, including a 21-19 victory over Clarion last season. The Vulcans last suffered a loss on Homecoming in 2004 to Shippensburg, which featured future NFL Pro Bowlers in Brent Grimes and John Kuhn.

• Last week, Cal U recorded both a blocked PAT and blocked punt in the win at Clarion. The Vulcans have now blocked multiple kicks in a game 11 times since the 2011 season. Midway through the first quarter, freshman Gerald Brown blocked a PAT attempt that prevented the Golden Eagles from tying the score. Early in the fourth quarter, junior Lamont McPhatter II blocked a punt and recovered the ball deep in Clarion territory.

• Junior running back Nelson Brown scored a pair of touchdowns last week at Clarion, as he now leads the PSAC and ranks second in NCAA Division II with 13 total touchdowns. He scored both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown against the Golden Eagles while finishing with 98 rushing yards. Brown sits third in the league with 642 rushing yards after rushing for over 1,950 yards the past two seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne.

• Junior linebackers London Cloud and Breon Coke both registered seven stops, 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack last weekend. A native of Ohio, Cloud leads the team with 44 tackles this year and is tied for fifth in the PSAC with 9.0 TFL. He has collected at least seven stops five times after previously playing at Lackawanna. Coke also added an interception while setting a season high in tackles in the win at Clarion.

• Cal U scored on all seven red-zone trips in the win at Clarion. The Vulcans rank among the top 10 in the country in red-zone offense this season, scoring on 93.5 percent (29-of-31) of their trips inside the red zone. Cal U has scored points on 21-consecutive trips inside the opponents' 20-yard line, which dates back to the first quarter of Week 3. The Vulcans have scored a touchdown 23 times while in the red zone.

• Last week, freshman quarterback Noah Mitchell posted three first-half touchdown passes and completed 13-of-17 attempts before halftime. He has now played consecutive games without committing a turnover and ranks fifth in the PSAC with a 141.7 passing efficiency. Mitchell sits seventh in the country with 1,829 passing yards, which is the second-most by a freshman at all NCAA divisions (Tyson Bagent, Shepherd).

• Sophomore Brian Alsobrooks converted a pair of field goals and completed both pass attempts last week in the win at Clarion. He is one of five kickers in the country to convert all of their field-goal attempts this year with the NCAA criteria being one field-goal attempt per game. Alsobrooks has made six field goals with a long of 33 yards while also averaging 57.4 yards per kickoff with four touchbacks.

• Sophomore Tyson Hill continues to emerge as one of the top wide receivers in the PSAC. He led the team with eight receptions, which is one shy of his career high, for 78 yards at Clarion. Hill ranks third in the league this year with both 37 receptions and 543 receiving yards. The Valley product has posted at least 50 receiving yards in all six games with six catches of at least 20 yards.
