Men's Soccer downed by Notre Dame (OH), 6-1

Falcons score four goals in 12-minute span during second half

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 10) – Facing one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA Division II, the Vulcans suffered a 6-1 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 0-3 this season with all three contests being played at home. Meanwhile, Notre Dame improves to 3-1 this year with its only loss coming against a nationally-ranked opponent.

The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening three minutes when Paolo Termine scored on a deflected cross. About 10 minutes later, sophomore Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) entered the game as the goalkeeper following an injury to two-time, All-PSAC First-Team goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium). Cal U tied the contest at the 15:54-mark when junior Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) notched his first goal of the year with assists from sophomore Cooper Amos (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and junior transfer Jaheed Loblack (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic), who was making his season debut. NDC broke the tie in the 23rd minute when Leonardo Paiva scored his initial goal of the game. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead into halftime after holding a slight 8-5 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

In the second half, NDC scored four goals over a 12-minute span with Paiva completing a hat trick at the 73:49-mark. Paiva became only the third active player in NCAA Division II to eclipse 100 career points on Sunday after he already entered the weekend as the nation's active leader in both goals and points per game.

Valeriano finished with six saves while playing over 77 minutes off the bench, both career highs.

The Falcons peppered the net with 16 shots in the second half and closed the game with a 24-8 shot advantage, in addition to a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U is idle for over a week before returning to action on Sept. 19 when it travels to face Cedarville, which is 25 miles east of Dayton, Ohio, at 7 p.m.
