CALIFORNIA (March 1) – The No. 5 Vulcans withstood a pair of injuries to starters, including senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport), and overcame a season-worst field-goal percentage to earn a 64-61 victory over Edinboro in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament at the Convocation Center on Wednesday night.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 27-2 this season behind a 13-0 mark at home. The Vulcans, which are the top seed in the tournament from the PSAC West, advance to face East Stroudsburg, which is the second seed in the PSAC East, in the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament on Saturday, March 4, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots drop to 21-9 overall after losing seven of their last 12 games.
Senior
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led all players with 19 points after shooting 5-of-11 from the floor and nine-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also collected five rebounds and two steals while playing just 26 minutes due to foul trouble. Martin, who averages 8.0 points per game this year, entered play having scored a combined 16 points over the last four games.
Sophomore
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) finished with eight points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals while also being the primary ball handler following the injury to Glenn. Junior
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) posted nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds (six offensive) while playing all 40 minutes and freshman
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) matched her season high of eight points in 17 minutes off the bench.
Glenn, who ranks among the top five all-time in school history in scoring, assists and steals, suffered an injury at the 5:01-mark of the first quarter and did not return to the game. Also, fellow senior starter
Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) didn't dress for the game due to injury.
The teams combined for just six points in the opening 3:30 of the game before Cal U scored eight-straight points to take a 10-4 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots countered by scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 12-11 at the end of the quarter. Cal U made just 2-of-17 attempts from the floor in the opening quarter on Wednesday. Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) being in foul trouble and the injury to Glenn. Edinboro built its lead to 25-19 with 4:08 left in the second quarter before Cal U responded with nine-consecutive points to take a 28-25 lead on a three-pointer by Hahn with 2:39 remaining before the break. The teams traded the final eight points of the second quarter with Barrett scoring on a layup at the buzzer to give the Vulcans a 32-29 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Edinboro reclaimed the lead at the 7:49-mark before Martin scored four-straight points to give Cal U a 38-35 lead with 6:36 left in the quarter. The Fighting Scots later tied the score on a three-pointer before Martin and Sporio converted four free-throw attempts in 16 seconds to give the Vulcans a 46-42 lead at the 2:46-mark. Edinboro countered with five-straight points before Cal U held a 48-47 lead at the end of the quarter. Both teams struggled from the floor in the fourth quarter, as they combined to make only nine field goals. The Fighting Scots snapped a scoreless drought of over two minutes with a three-pointer at the 4:07-mark to take a 55-53 lead. Cal U then stopped a nearly four-minute scoreless drought when Martin converted a three-point play with 2:44 left in regulation to give the Vulcans a 56-55 lead. Parsons, who was just 1-of-10 from the floor, stretched the lead to 58-55 with 1:28 remaining before the Fighting Scots made a jumper on the ensuing possession. Following another set of Parsons free-throws, Martin made a layup to stretch the lead to 62-57 with 38 seconds left to play. Edinboro managed to cut the deficit to within three points twice in the final 30 seconds before a steal by Sporio in the final second sealed the victory – the seventh-straight for Cal U in the PSAC Tournament.
The Vulcans made just 19-of-60 attempts from the floor for a season-low .317 field-goal percentage. In comparison, the Fighting Scots shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor, including 52 percent in the first half. Cal U converted 23-of-31 attempts from the charity stripe compared to just nine free-throw attempts by Edinboro. The Vulcans finished with a slim 38-37 rebounding advantage behind 20 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. Cal U also forced 24 turnovers in the victory.
Edinboro junior Ciara Rosten, a NCAA Division I transfer from UMass, led the team with 14 points and also registered six rebounds and four blocks before fouling out with 1:57 left to play. Sophomore Cheniya Sharpe added 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while senior Katie Fischer posted 11 points and eight assists.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, March 4, when it faces East Stroudsburg in the semifinals of the league tournament. The semifinals and championship of the PSAC Tournament will be hosted by Shippensburg.
