Men's Basketball tops Bloomsburg, 94-79

Vulcans feature five players in double-figures; Cal U records season-high 26 points off the bench

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 2) – Junior Jahmere Howze (Cleveland, Ohio/Warrensville Heights) led the team with 24 points and senior Isaiah Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 21 points on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans posted a 94-79 victory at Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team moves to 5-2 overall with a 2-1 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 4-3 this season behind a 0-3 mark in conference play. Since the 2012-13 season, Bloomsburg is just 8-26 against opponents from the PSAC Western Division. 

Howze registered 24 points after shooting 10-of-14 from the field and added seven rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench. Lewis tallied 21 points on 7-of-17 from the floor and was 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. He also collected seven rebounds and a season-high nine assists while playing a team-high 38 minutes. Lewis posted his fourth 20-point performance of the season and has scored in double-figures in all seven games. 

Senior Cordell Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) scored 18 points after converting four-of-nine from beyond the arc and collected six rebounds and five assists on Saturday. Senior Terry Davis, Jr. (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) totaled 17 points after shooting six-of-seven from the field and added four rebounds, while classmate Robel Teckle (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) posted 10 points and five rebounds against the Huskies. 

Cal U opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers by Smith before Bloomsburg responded to trim the deficit to 8-5 on a layup with 16:51 left in the first half. The Vulcans countered with a 6-2 run capped off by four-straight points from Lewis. The Huskies used a 12-7 rally to trail 21-19 midway through the half while converting five-of-nine from the floor. Cal U extended its lead to as many as eight points following a 12-6 run while forcing a pair of turnovers to take a 33-25 advantage at the 6:16-mark. Bloomsburg closed the half by making 7-of-11 from the floor to cut the deficit to 45-41 heading into the break. 

The Huskies mounted an 8-4 run early in the second half to tie the game at 49-49 with 16:38 remaining. The Vulcans then reclaimed the lead on an 11-2 run after making four-of-four from the floor during that stretch. Bloomsburg countered once again, trimming the deficit to 61-59 with 10:19 left in the second half while Cal U failed to convert a field goal for over three-plus minutes. The Huskies stayed within striking distance until a pair of three-pointers by Teckle extended the Vulcan lead to 81-72. Cal U sealed the game with a 13-4 run after making seven-of-nine from the free-throw line in the final three minutes of the game.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 35-of-66 (53.0 percent) from the field, while converting 17 shots from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Huskies made 42.7 percent (32-of-75) from the floor behind 7-of-19 from long range. Cal U held a slim 42-39 advantage on rebounds and notched a season-high 26 points off the bench.

Senior Christian Mortellite led four players in double-digits with 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. He added seven rebounds (three offensive) and two assists in a team-high 31 minutes. Senior Kyle-Michael Rose posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds (eight offensive), while teammate Hashim Moore added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 3, when it faces East Stroudsburg at 3 p.m.
