Cal U falls in crossover play at Edinboro, 3-1

Bellhy, Priore combine for 27 kills, 32 points in road loss to Fighting Scots

EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 7) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19) at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action to snap its six-match winning streak.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 11-6 this season behind a 5-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 13-4 overall with a 3-3 record in conference action.

Sophomore Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) led all players with 17 kills on a .256 hitting percentage. She also collected seven digs in the losing effort. Junior Tina Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) finished with 10 kills while hitting at a .412 clip and registered six blocks.

Senior Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) both tallied seven kills and three blocks on Saturday. Sophomore Samantha Raidt (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) directed the offense with a career-high 31 assists and also set a career best with nine digs. Freshman Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) led the team with 20 digs and junior Marisa Fanelli (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) posted 11 digs at Edinboro.

Cal U committed just two attacking errors in the opening set, but Edinboro posted a .250 hitting percentage to win the set by a 25-19 count. The Vulcans took an early 3-1 lead and later held a 7-4 lead on a block assist by van Schaik and Bellhy. Edinboro countered with a 5-2 run to tie the score at 9-9 before the teams traded back-to-back points. The Fighting Scots later mounted a 7-3 rally to take an 18-15 lead and forced the Vulcans to call a timeout. Cal U won the initial point after the break before Edinboro closed the set on another 7-3 run to earn the 25-19 victory.

In the second set, the Fighting Scots again hit at a .250 clip and took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 win. Cal U won the opening three points of the set and held an 8-5 lead before Edinboro won six of seven points to take an 11-9 lead. The Vulcans countered with three-straight points to reclaim the lead at 12-11 on a block assist by Leto and Bellhy and forced the Fighting Scots to call a timeout. Edinboro later rallied off six-consecutive points to take an 18-13 lead. The teams later traded nine-straight points before Cal U collected back-to-back points to trim the deficit to 23-21 on a kill by Bellhy. The Fighting Scots then called its final timeout and won the next two points to earn the 25-21 victory.

Cal U registered an impressive .344 hitting percentage in the third set compared to a .000 clip by Edinboro. The Fighting Scots held a 7-5 lead before the Vulcans mounted a 5-1 run to take a 10-8 lead on a kill by Bellhy. Edinboro then tied the match at 10-10 before the teams traded the next four points.  Cal U seized control of the set by winning 10-unanwered points, including four kills, to take a 22-12 lead. The teams then traded back-to-back points before the Vulcans earned the 25-15 win on a kill by van Schaik.

The Vulcans committed seven attacking errors and the Fighting Scots posted a .306 hitting percentage in the fourth set to seal the match victory. Edinboro took a 4-2 lead to open the set before Cal U tied the score at 5-5 on a kill by van Schaik. The Fighting Scots countered with four-straight points to take a 9-5 lead before the Vulcans won five of the next seven points to trim the deficit to 11-10 on a kill by Bellhy. Edinboro countered with a 5-1 run to reclaim the lead at 16-11 before Cal U answered with consecutive points to cut the deficit to 16-13 on a service ace by Raidt. The teams traded the next six points before the Fighting Scots won four-straight points to take a 23-16 lead. Cal U countered with three-consecutive points to cut the deficit to 23-19 and force Edinboro to call a timeout. The Fighting Scots then sealed the match with back-to-back points in a 25-19 victory.
 
Cal U returns to action when it opens PSAC Southwest play on Tuesday, Oct. 10, when it hosts Seton Hill at 7 p.m.
