Cal U claims sweep at East Stroudsburg, 3-0

Hayes, Leto combine for 26 kills, 27 digs in victory against Warriors

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – Junior Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and senior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both recorded kill/dig double-doubles on Friday night, as the Vulcans posted a 3-0 win (27-25, 25-22, 25-20) at East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 11-3 overall and remains undefeated in league action with a 3-0 mark. All four members of the newly-formed PSAC Southwest Division have opened crossover play with a 3-0 record. Meanwhile, ESU falls to 8-8 this season with a 0-3 record in conference play.

Leto led the team with 14 kills on a .297 hitting percentage and added 13 digs for her fourth kill/dig double-double of the year. Hayes tallied 12 kills while hitting at a .270 clip and finished with 14 digs against the Warriors. Senior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) guided the offense with 33 assists and added 14 digs in the victory.

Sophomore Bayleana Sowers (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) paced the defense with 15 digs and junior Emily Berry (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) collected 10 digs on Friday. Junior Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded three service aces, while sophomores Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) and Tina Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) both posted two blocks.

The Vulcans opened the match with a 27-25 victory in the first set despite committing 10 attack errors. Cal U started play on a 4-2 run before ESU rallied to win seven of nine points to claim a 9-6 lead. Following a timeout, the Vulcans countered with an 8-3 run to take a 14-12 lead on a service ace by Solo. The teams then traded points before the Warriors answered with a 6-2 run to reclaim the lead at 21-19 following a service ace. Cal U claimed the next four points and won five of six points to take a 24-22 lead on a kill by Bellhy. ESU won the next two points to tie the score at 24-24 before the teams traded the next two points and forced a tie at 25-25. The Vulcans captured the win with back-to-back kills by Leto and Hayes.

In the second set, Cal U finished with a .263 hitting percentage and the teams combined for seven lead changes. The Warriors opened the set on a 5-2 run before the Vulcans won five of the next six points to take a 7-6 lead on an attacking error. The teams then traded runs of three-straight points before ESU won back-to-back points to tie the score at 12-12. The Warriors later won five of seven points to take a 17-15 lead before the Vulcans countered with three-consecutive points to retake the lead at 18-17 on a kill by Hayes. ESU responded with a 5-2 run to reclaim the lead at 22-20 before Cal U called a timeout. The Vulcans then rallied off five-unanswered points to earn the 25-22 victory on a service ace by Berry.

The Vulcans completed the match sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set, as the Warriors committed seven attack errors. The teams traded points early in the set before Cal U won four-straight points to take an 8-6 lead on a service by Litoborski. Again, the teams countered points before the Vulcans rallied off four-consecutive points to take an 18-13 lead to force a timeout by the Warriors. ESU cut the deficit to 21-19 before Cal U called a timeout and then won four of the next five points to win the set by a 25-20 margin.

Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 1, when it faces Kutztown at 1 p.m.
