Vulcans repeat as PSAC Champions, 62-52

Cal U earns AQ to NCAA Tournament; Glenn named PSAC Championships MVP for consecutive year

CALIFORNIA (March 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team repeated as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champions with a 62-52 victory against IUP in the finals of the league tournament at Hamer Hall on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 24-5 overall and eared the league's automatic qualifier for the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Cal U captured its sixth league championship, which is tied for the most in conference history, and repeated as conference champions for the first time since winning three-straight titles from 2002-04. The Vulcans will learn their seed later tonight when the NCAA releases the field for the NCAA Tournament via a webstream at 10 p.m. EST.

Junior guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a game-high 30 points on 8-of-15 shooting and made 12-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line. She also posted seven rebounds, three assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Glenn was named the PSAC Championships MVP for the second-straight year after averaging 27.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals over the last two games.

Sophomore Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) recorded her 10th double-double of the year, including her third against the Crimson Hawks. She finished with 15 points (11 second half) after shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and registered 12 rebounds (eight offensive) and four blocks. Classmate Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) posted nine points and 12 rebounds (four offensive) before fouling out in just 25 minutes.

Cal U scored seven-straight points midway through the first quarter to take an 11-2 lead on a jumper by Barrett with 4:21 left in the quarter. The Crimson Hawks scored back-to-back baskets before the Vulcans mounted a 14-0 run to take a 20-6 lead at the end of the quarter. IUP was held to just 3-of-15 shooting and committed four turnovers (eight in the game) in the first quarter.

The Crimson Hawks countered with 19-unanswered points in the opening five-plus minutes of the second quarter to take a 25-20 lead with 4:25 left in the first half. Cal U missed all eight shot attempts from the floor and committed three turnovers during the run. The Vulcans then scored eight of the next 10 points to reclaim the lead at 28-27 on a jumper by junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) at the 1:06-mark. The teams traded free-throws in the final minute of the second quarter with Cal U taking a 31-29 lead at the break.

Cal U started the third quarter on a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 40-31 on a jumper by Barrett with 4:45 left in the quarter. The Crimson Hawks answered with a 9-2 run of their own over nearly four minutes to trim the deficit to 42-40 at the 1:05-mark in the third quarter.

The Vulcans held a 45-42 lead at the end of the third quarter before taking a 50-43 lead on a three-point play by Parsons with 8:22 left to play. Cal U later scored six of eight points to take a 56-47 lead on a jumper by Martin at the 3:48-mark. The Crimson Hawks scored the next two baskets to cut the deficit to 56-51 with 2:36 remaining before Glenn made six free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory. IUP was held without a basket for the final 2:36 of the game, while Cal U made its last field goal of the game with 3:48 remaining.

Cal U finished the game shooting 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the floor and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, IUP shot at a 30.4 clip (17-of-56) from the field and 72.7 percent (16-of-22). Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, making just a combined 18.2 percent (4-for-22 ). The Vulcans finished with a 46-36 rebounding advantage behind 18 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points.

Senior Zhane Brooks and sophomore Megan Smith both scored a team-leading 17 points for the Crimson Hawks and Brooks totaled 11 rebounds (four offensive) for a double-double. Senior Leslie Stapleton, who entered play averaging 16.6 points per game, was held to just one point after scoring a career-high 33 points yesterday.

The Vulcans have been featured in each of the NCAA Atlantic regional rankings this season, sitting third in each of the last two weeks. Cal U posted back-to-back victories in the PSAC Tournament this weekend against teams that were featured in the latest regional rankings.
