CLARION, Pa. (March 20) – Senior
GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) broke the all-time school record for innings pitched on Sunday afternoon and the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team completed a season-series sweep of Clarion, winning 6-3 and 9-0 on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 11-9 overall and start league play with a 4-0 record for the first time since the 2010 season. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 3-10 this year behind a 0-4 mark in divisional action.
In Game 1, Senchak (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits and three walks in 6.0 innings (99 pitches), while also recording six strikeouts. He moved into first place in school history with 232.1 career innings pitched, eclipsing the previous mark of 227.1 innings set by
Chris Doerschner (2004-07). Senchak is also now tied for eighth place all-time in school history with 18 victories.
Cal U raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with each run coming with two outs. With the bases loaded, freshman catcher
Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) delivered a two-run single before sophomore third baseman
Garrett Brooks (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) followed with an RBI double. The Golden Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning before the Vulcans countered with a pair of runs in the third. Junior right fielder
Taylor Zackman (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) drew a bases-loaded walk before Brooks scored on a ground-out.
In the top of the fifth, the Vulcans stretched the lead to 6-2 when junior second baseman
Danny McGrath (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) lined a two-out RBI single. Clarion cut the deficit to 6-3 with a homer by catcher Brian Laurito to start the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles later had runners on the corners and no outs before sophomore
Matt Carter (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) took the mound. Carter retired the next three batters in order and prevented either runner from advancing to earn his third save of the year.
Brooks finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Webb went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Clarion starter Kyle Armagost (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and seven walks in 5.0 innings (106 pitches).
In Game 2, junior
Joe Yourgal (Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout while making just the second start of his college career. He allowed only three base runners (one hit by pitch), all with two outs, and didn't allow the Golden Eagles to advance a runner into scoring position.
The Vulcans loaded the bases in the top of the third before executing a triple steal with freshman right fielder
Eric Fairman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scoring on the play. A ground-out to third prevented the runners from advancing before senior first baseman
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) collected a two-run double with two outs, 3-0.
In the fifth, sophomore shortstop
Austin Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) led off the inning with a double before senior center fielder
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) followed with an RBI double. McGrath then delivered an RBI single and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior left fielder
Jared Grove (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) later posted a two-out, RBI single before Clarion made a pitching change.
Following a strikeout, the Vulcans had runners on the corners before scoring two runs on one play without the ball being put in play. Sophomore designated hitter
Chris Wastchak (Peters Twp., Pa./Peters Township) scored from third on the throw down to second when Grove was stealing second. While Clarion was attempting to throw out Wastchak, Grove advanced to third and then scored on a throwing error that was in attempt to get him out at third. Cal U added to its lead in the sixth when Wastchak drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
Logan finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Fairman and Fennell also both scored twice in the nightcap.
Clarion starter Kane McCall (0-2) was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on six hits and three walks in 4.1 innings.
The Vulcans finished with a combined eight steals in the doubleheader after entering the day with 15 stolen bases in 18 games.
Cal U returns to action on Friday, March 25, when it opens a weekend series with Seton Hill by hosting a doubleheader at CONSOL Energy Park starting at 1 p.m.
