Cal U earns West title, tops Edinboro, 83-52

Vulcans secure top spot in divisional standings for first time since 2008-09 season

CALIFONRIA (Feb. 24) – The Vulcans captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title for the first time since the 2008-09 season on Wednesday evening, as they closed the regular season with an 83-52 win over Edinboro in divisional play at the Convocation Center.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 21-5 overall after closing the regular season on a 10-game winning streak. The Vulcans also finish the year with an 18-4 mark in league play, two-games ahead of the rest of division, and moved up to third in the latest NCAA regional rankings released earlier on Wednesday. Cal U previously finished second in the PSAC West standings three times (2010, 2011, 2015) since claiming the divisional crown, including last year. Meanwhile, Edinboro finishes the regular season with a 19-9 mark behind a 14-8 record in league play.

Junior guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a team-high 19 points after shooting 5-of-11 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. She also collected four rebounds, seven assists and six steals while playing all 40 minutes.

Sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) recorded her 13th double-double of the year after finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds (four offensive). Classmate Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) totaled 17 points, eight rebounds (four offensive), two blocks and two steals in the victory. Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added nine points and seven rebounds (five offensive) against Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots scored the opening basket of the game and held the Vulcans scoreless for nearly two minutes. Cal U responded with a 10-2 run to take a 10-4 lead on a jumper by Parsons with 5:41 left in the first quarter. Edinboro then converted three free-throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt before Cal U answered with nine-unanswered points to jump out to a 19-7 lead on a layup by Martin with 1:42 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter with the Vulcans holding a 23-11 lead at the break.

Cal U mounted a 9-2 rally early in the second quarter to take a 35-15 lead with 5:27 left in the first half.  The Fighting Scots then scored 10 of the next 11 points to trim the deficit to 36-25 with eight seconds left before the break. Glenn then made a pair of free-throws just seconds later to give Cal U a 38-25 lead at halftime. The Vulcans were held without a field goal over the last 5:27 of the first half, missing all eight of their shot attempts.

The Vulcans opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run after making five-of-six shots to take a 48-27 lead on a layup by Jennings with 7:34 left in the quarter. The teams traded points for the next several minutes before Edinboro closed the third quarter on a 9-4 rally to the trim the deficit to 60-44 at the start of the fourth.

Cal U scored the initial 11 points of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 71-44 on a jumper by Barrett with 5:26 left in the game. The Fighting Scots were held scoreless in the quarter until the 5:12-mark and the Vulcans eventually built their lead to 31 points twice in the final minute.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting at a 46.8 clip (29-of-62) from the floor and totaled 31 free-throw attempts. In comparison, the Fighting Scots made 39.0 percent (23-of-59) from the field with no three-pointers (nine attempts) and collected just 15 free-throw attempts. Cal U registered a 38-36 rebounding advantage and forced 25 turnovers, which were converted into 30 points.

Edinboro senior forward Aignee' Freeland scored a game-high 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting and added five rebounds. Junior Katie Fischer finished with 10 points, five assists and three steals in the loss.

Cal U is idle this weekend during the first round of the PSAC Tournament before playing host to the winner of (4) Edinboro-(5) Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The semifinals and championship of the tournament will then be hosted by the highest remaining seed from the PSAC West.
