Shepherd advanced inside the 5-yard line before missing a 21-yard field goal on the opening play of the second quarter. The teams then traded field position until midway through the quarter before the Rams recorded another strip sack with defensive lineman Bruno Anyangwe returning the fumble 36 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 6:32 left before halftime. Shepherd took its initial lead of the game with 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Ziemba to wide receiver Billy Brown.
