Vulcans drop finale in OT at Lock Haven, 2-1

Cal U tied game in 65th minute, Bald Eagles scored GW with only 1:02 left in overtime period

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 29) – In its final game of the season, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest in overtime at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Vulcans close out the season at 2-11-3 overall with all 16 games in conference action. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles finished the year with a 7-10 record behind a 6-10 mark in league play. 

Lock Haven out-shot Cal U by an 8-0 margin in the first half yet was unable to register a goal in the first 45 minutes of play. The Bald Eagles eventually took a 1-0 lead at the 61:35 minute-mark on a goal by Janelle Swartz. Cal U answered just three minutes later when freshman Luisa Holzapfel (Medellín, Colombia/Brashear (Pa.) registered her first career goal on an assist from sophomore Danielle Koehler (Coal Center, Pa./California). The teams combined for only one shot attempt in the final 25 minutes of regulation as the score remained tied at 1-1.

In the overtime period, Holzapfel sent the only shot attempt for the Vulcans high in the 92nd minute. Lock Haven scored the game-winning goal at the 98:58-mark when Marah Foltz found the back of the net following a long pass.

Senior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) collected six saves in the losing effort. She finishes her career ranked fourth in school history with 322 saves and is one of three goalies to close a career with a sub-1.00 goals-against average.

Lock Haven finished with a 13-3 shot advantage, as Cal U recorded two shots in the second half. The Bald Eagles also held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
