CALIFORNIA (Jan. 17) – Sophomores
Luka Andjusic (Belgrade, Serbia/Borislav Petrov Braca) and
Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) both made five three-pointers and combined for 37 points on Sunday afternoon, as the Vulcans claimed a 92-59 win over Penn State-Greater Allegheny in non-conference play at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 7-11 overall after winning two of its last three games. Meanwhile, Greater Allegheny falls to 7-7 this season after having its four-game winning streak snapped.
Andjusic scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including five-of-eight from beyond the arc. He also tallied seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in the victory. Andjusic has now recorded three 20-point games this season, making at least five treys each time.
Miller established a career high with 17 points against the Lions after making five-of-seven from long range. He is shooting 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point territory since moving into the starting lineup on Jan. 9 – four games.
Senior
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) finished with 14 points, six rebounds and two assists, while sophomore
Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) posted nine points and five rebounds off the bench. Senior
Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) collected seven assists in the victory, while classmate
Nate Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) tied for the team lead with seven rebounds off the bench.
The Vulcans opened the game on a 15-2 run after making six of their first eight shots. Greater Allegheny answered with a 10-4 rally over two-plus minutes to cut the deficit to 19-12 with 13:50 left in the first half. Cal U then responded with a 13-2 run, including eight-unanswered points, to build a 32-14 lead on a three-pointer by Andjusic at the 8:30-mark. After back-to-back baskets by the Lions, the Vulcans scored eight-straight points to take their largest lead of the first half at 40-18 with 5:23 remaining before the break. Cal U later scored seven of 10 points to take a 47-26 lead at halftime.
Cal U scored the initial five points of the second half to stretch the lead to 52-26 on a three-pointer by Miller at the 18:46-mark. The teams traded points for the next several minutes before the Vulcans mounted a 12-5 run in just over two minutes to take a 75-45 lead on a trey by Andjusic with 7:41 left to play. Greater Allegheny then scored back-to-back baskets before Cal U scored nine-straight points. The Vulcans later posted a run of six-unanswered points to build their largest lead of the game at 92-57 on a layup by Sapp with 36 seconds remaining.
The Vulcans registered their second-best shooting performance of the season at 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the floor. Cal U also made a season-high 12 three-pointers and shot a season-best 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Lions shot at a 35.2 clip (25-of-71) from the field and attempted only six free-throws. Cal U held a dominating 48-27 rebounding advantage and scored 15 second-chance points.
Freshman Jordon Payne and sophomore Curtis Newby both led Greater Allegheny with 14 points, while Newby also paced the team with eight rebounds. Sophomore Jeremy McMunn added 11 points and three steals in the loss.
Cal U returns to league play on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when it travels to face Edinboro at 7:30 p.m.
