Vulcans advance past Bloomsburg, 63-48

Fratz scores 22 points in first half; Cal U to play in first PSAC Championship since 2011

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (March 7) – Senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) scored a season-high 32 points on Saturday afternoon in leading the No. 18 Vulcans to a 63-48 victory at No. 12 Bloomsburg in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 25-4 overall. The Vulcans will now face West Chester in the PSAC Championship tomorrow, Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m. The game will broadcast live throughout the state on PCN and will be available to watch through the PCN Mobile App. Meanwhile, the host Huskies fall to 24-4 this season and will likely receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Fratz finished with 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor and 10-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line. She also totaled five rebounds and two steals while playing all 40 minutes on Saturday. An All-PSAC West Second-Team selection, Fratz scored 22 points in the first half before finishing just two points shy of matching her career high of 34 points, which she accomplished twice while previously playing at Pitt-Johnstown. The Maryland native is the first player to score at least 30 points in a post-season game since former guard Crystal Andrews posted 31 points in the 2010 PSAC Championship.

Sophomore Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) added 16 points (12 second half), eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, while senior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) collected eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) paced the team with 10 rebounds off the bench and also scored seven points. A total of just four players scored in the victory for Cal U.

The Huskies scored the opening basket just five seconds into the game before Fratz scored four-straight points to give the Vulcans a 4-2 lead with 18:14 left in the first half. The teams then traded baskets before Bloomsburg took a 12-10 lead with 10:59 remaining before halftime. The Vulcans answered with an 11-3 run, including eight points by Fratz, over nearly four minutes to take a 21-15 lead at the 7:03-mark. Cal U later worked the lead to 26-19 on a three-pointer by Mahady, who was held scoreless in the regular-season meeting at Bloomsburg, with 4:06 left in the first half. The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 28-25 before the Vulcans scored six of the last eight points before halftime to take a 34-27 lead at the break.

Bloomsburg scored five of the initial seven points in the second half before Cal U countered with eight-unanswered points to take at 45-32 lead on a pair of free-throws by Fratz at the 13:49-mark. The Huskies snapped a four-plus minute scoreless drought by mounting a 6-2 rally to work the deficit down to 47-38 with 10:13 remaining. Following a timeout, Cal U registered an 8-2 run to take a 55-40 lead on a layup by Barrett with 7:37 left to play. The Vulcans then took their largest lead of the game at 57-41 on the next possession when Fratz made a layup at the 6:26-mark. Bloomsburg managed to cut the deficit to as few as 11 points twice before Cal U answered with baskets. The Huskies were held scoreless over the last 4:30 of the game while being held to a season-low 48 points.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor and 88.2 percent (15-of-17) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg made 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field and attempted only six free-throws. The Vulcans held a 42-30 rebounding advantage and forced 14 turnovers in the victory.

Junior forward Adreana Sadowski led the Huskies with 13 points and seven rebounds (five offensive). Senior Marla Simmons, who was named PSAC East Athlete of the Year earlier this week, finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five turnovers in the loss.

Cal U will face West Chester in the PSAC Championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Golden Rams advanced to the finals with a 63-59 dramatic victory against No. 7 IUP, the top seed from the West, on Saturday afternoon. Cal U and West Chester have previously met four times in the PSAC Tournament with the Vulcans winning each time, most recently an 81-63 win in the semifinals of the 2010 PSAC Tournament.
