GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 15) – The Vulcans dropped both games of a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-4 and 5-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team drops to 3-8 this season with a 1-3 record after the opening weekend of divisional play. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in league action. The Griffins totaled 41 victories last year en route to advancing to the College World Series.
In Game 1, the Vulcans scored one run in each of the opening four innings to take a 4-0 lead. Cal U jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after junior first baseman
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) delivered a two-out RBI single. In the second, senior catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) belted a solo homer before junior center fielder
Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) opened the third with a solo homer. Cal U stretched its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth with a solo homer by redshirt freshman

The Griffins answered with four runs in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4. Seton Hill opened the inning with back-to-back singles before left fielder Matt Malacane belted a three-run homer. The Griffins later tied the score on a ground-out after second baseman Pat McCarthy reached on a triple down the right-field line. In the sixth, Seton Hill claimed a 5-4 lead on a two-out RBI single by Malacane off junior reliever
Cory Craig (Youngsville, Pa./Youngsville).
Craig (1-2) suffered the loss after yielding one run (earned) on one hit and two walks. Junior
GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) took a no-decision while making his first start since suffering a season-ending injury on March 31, 2014. He allowed four runs (all earned) on four hits and one walk over 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. Seton Hill starter Jordan Fuller (3-0) earned the victory after surrendering four runs (all earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Freshman Perry DellaValle registered his third save of the year after retiring the side in order in the seventh.
Marcus went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while three players each posted solo homers.
In Game 2, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo homer by freshman right fielder
Chris Wastchak (Peters Twp., Pa./Peters Township) before Seton Hill tied the score on a sacrifice fly in the third. The Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the fourth despite being held without a hit, as Wastchak reached on a leadoff walk and later scored from second on an error. Seton Hill countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to the score at 2-2 after the first four batters in the inning reached on a hit.
The Griffins took the lead in the fifth when first baseman Zac Heide belted a three-run homer with two outs. Just previously to the go-ahead homer, Cal U prevented a run from scoring when McCarthy was caught in a rundown between third and home.
Fennell (0-1), who started Game 2 at pitcher before moving to center field, suffered the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) and scattering 10 hits in 5.0 innings. Seton Hill junior Kevin Neumann (1-0) earned the victory after yielding three hits over 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Fennell collected two of the team's five hits in Game 2, while Wastchak scored both runs.
In the four-game weekend series, Cal U belted six homers and the two teams registered a combined 10 homers. The Vulcans totaled just seven homers all of last season while playing 47 games .
The Vulcans return to non-conference play on Tuesday, March 17, when they host a doubleheader against Walsh at CONSOL Energy Park, starting at 1 p.m.
