GREENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 6) – In a rematch of last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss (11-25, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25) at Seton Hill in league play on Tuesday night.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls 6-11 overall with a 4-3 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 14-5 this season behind a 5-2 record in conference play.
The trio of sophomore
Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), junior
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and senior
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) combined for 36 of the team's 43 kills. Leto led the team and tied her career high with 14 kills, while Hayes and Lavery posted 13 and nine kills, respectively.
Junior
Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) directed the offense with 34 assists and paced the defense with 17 digs for her 11th assist/dig double-double of the season. Leto and fellow sophomore
Emily Berry (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) each added 14 digs, while Leto also tallied three service aces and two blocks. Senior
Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) recorded a team-high five blocks in the loss.
In the first set, Seton Hill opened the match with an 8-2 run before the teams traded the next 11 points. The Griffins then won three-straight points to stretch their lead to 16-8 and later claimed five-consecutive points to take a sizeable 22-10 lead. Following a kill by Hayes, Seton Hill earned three-straight points to claim the 25-11 victory.
The Vulcans took an early 6-3 lead in the second set following back-to-back kills by Leto. Seton Hill later mounted a 7-3 run to tie the score at 11-11 before Cal U won four-straight points to take a 15-11 lead on a kill by Leto. The Griffins answered with an 8-4 run to force the Vulcans into a timeout with the scored tied at 19-19. Cal U then won three of four points before Seton Hill called its first timeout of the set. After the teams traded one point, the Griffins called their final timeout while facing set point before a block assist by Fouzie and Lavery sealed a 25-22 victory for the Vulcans.
In the third set, the teams traded the opening five points before Cal U later won six of eight points to take a 10-7 lead on a kill by Hayes. The Griffins answered by claiming six of the next seven points to take a 13-11 lead, forcing the Vulcans to call a timeout. The teams then traded seven points before a service ace by Fouzie gave Cal U a 17-16 lead. Seton Hill earned four of the next five points to take a 20-18 lead and later won four of five points to stretch the lead to 24-21. The Vulcans staved off set point twice before the Griffins earned a 25-23 win.
The Vulcans won four-straight points early in the fourth set to take a 5-4 lead and later won six of seven points to claim a 12-10 lead on a block assist. Seton Hill then won seven-consecutive points to take a 17-12 lead before Cal U answered by winning five of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 19-17 on a block assist by Fouzie and Lavery. The teams traded points before the Griffins won three-straight points to take a 23-18 lead and forced the Vulcans to call a timeout. Cal U responded by winning three-consecutive points before Seton Hill claimed the match victory with a 25-22 win.
Cal U returns to action with a pair of home matches at the Convocation Center this weekend, beginning Friday, Oct. 9, against preseason PSAC West-favorite Clarion at 7 p.m.
