Men's Soccer eliminated at Seton Hill, 1-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 4) – The Vulcans were eliminated from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 loss at Seton Hill in the quarterfinals.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finishes the year with a 6-11-1 overall record. The Vulcans earned the sixth and final seed in the tournament with a win in their last game of the regular season. Meanwhile, the third-seeded Griffins improve to 12-5-2 this season and advance to face Bloomsburg, which earned a bye as the second seed, in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 7.

Seton Hill looked to take the lead in the opening minute of the game before a header sailed wide of the net. The Griffins continued their aggressive offense play midway through the first half, being whistled for four offsides in a seven-minute span. Seton Hill registered the eventual game-winning goal at the 33:43-mark when Ben Alport scored off a loose ball from the top of the box. The Griffins attempted to add to their lead in the final minute of the first half before a header off a corner kick was saved by senior goalkeeper Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East).

The Vulcans looked to answer in the early portion of the second half with a pair of shot attempts by senior Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln), including a header placed on goal at the 65:35-mark. Seton Hill was later prevented from adding an insurance goal despite having back-to-back corner kicks near the 75th minute.

Donovan made four saves while playing all 90 minutes on Tuesday. Seton Hill goalkeeper Cameron Evans tallied two saves to post his league-leading eighth shutout of the season.

Seton Hill finished the game with an 8-5 shot advantage and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
