CALIFORNIA (Nov. 24) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team scored over 100 points for the first time since the 2007-08 season-opener with a 108-70 victory against Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Monday night at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 4-2 this season after all 12 players scored at least one point on Monday. Cal U has scored at least 85 points in four of six games this season and ranks fourth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in scoring offense at 82.2 points per game. Meanwhile, Greater Allegheny falls to 4-5 overall under first-year head coach Tyler Care, who served as a graduate assistant with the Vulcans last season.
Junior guard
Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) scored a team-high 21 points after shooting 8-of-12 from the floor, highlighted by five-of-eight from beyond the arc. Jacubec totaled 15 points in the second half and collected four rebounds and two assists while playing only 20 minutes.
Freshman
Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) posted 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals while playing a team-high 27 minutes off the bench. Classmate
Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting off the bench, while junior
Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) and sophomore
Chika Obi (Owerri, Nigeria/Chapelgate Christian Academy (Md.)) both finished with 11 points.
Junior forward
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds (five offensive), while sophomore guard
Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) tallied eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Lions made their opening four shots to take a 9-3 lead with 17:24 left in the first half. Cal U responded with an 18-5 run over six-plus minutes to take a 21-14 lead on a layup by sophomore
Avery Allmond (Manassas, Va./Long Reach (Md.)) with 10:55 remaining before the break. After the Lions converted three free-throws, the Vulcans mounted a 12-2 rally to stretch their lead to 33-19 with 4:39 remaining before halftime. Greater Allegheny scored five-straight points before Cal U closed the first half on a 12-1 run to take a 45-25 lead at the break after Miller made a three-pointer as time expired.
Cal U opened the second half with an 8-2 run to take a 53-27 lead on a layup by Jacubec with 17:32 remaining. The Vulcans later mounted a 9-2 run to stretch their lead to 64-33 lead following a pair of free-throws by senior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) at the 14:17-mark. After the teams traded baskets, Cal U posted a 15-2 run with eight points by Jacubec over three-plus minutes to take an 80-41 lead with 10:06 left to play. The Vulcans stretched their lead to as many as 50 points, 106-56, after a three-pointer by Sapp capped a 20-7 run with 2:34 remaining.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 51.2 percent (43-of-84) from the floor, including 58.1 percent (25-of-43) in the second half. The Vulcans also made 13 three-pointers in the contest after shooting 8-of-16 from long range in the second half. In comparison, the Lions shot at a 32.4 clip (22-of-68) from the field and 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from beyond the arc. Cal U out-rebounded Greater Allegheny by a sizeable 57-37 margin and scored 52 points from inside the paint.
Freshman Khari Hicks scored a team-high 21 points on 8-of-20 attempts for the Lions, while senior Petrie Addison was limited to 13 points after previously leading the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) with 26.2 points per game.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26, when they travel face Urbana at 2 p.m.
