Vulcans advance on penalty kicks

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 14) – The sixth-seeded Vulcans advanced in the NCAA Tournament with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against third-seeded Kutztown after finishing with a 4-3 advantage in a shootout on Friday afternoon.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 12-4-5 overall and will face host and second-seeded West Chester on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 12 p.m. Meanwhile, Kutztown finishes the season with a 15-5-1 mark.

In the shootout, the Golden Bears made their first shot and missed their second attempt while the Vulcans missed their first attempt and converted their second shot. Both teams made their third shots before Kutztown missed their fourth attempt. Cal U took its first lead of the shootout at 3-2 when junior Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) made her attempt. The Golden Bears tied the score on the next before the Vulcans clinched the shootout victory with a goal by sophomore Marissa Antrilli (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when senior forward Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) scored her first goal of the season, unassisted. With less than four minutes left in regulation, the Golden Bears tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Diana Malanga, her ninth of the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) made the only save of the overtime periods when she stopped a shot at the 92:37-mark.

Jayes finished the game six saves in 110 minutes of action, while Kutztown goalkeeper Deanna Messner totaled two saves in the contest.

Kutztown posted 17-6 shot advantage, including 15-6 edge in regulation. The Golden Bears also held a 9-1 margin in corner kicks with five corners in the second half.

The Vulcans continue play in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday when they face West Chester in the second round at 12 p.m.
