CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium for Homecoming this weekend after suffering a 38-31 loss at No. 17 West Chester last Saturday. Meanwhile, Clarion was dealt a 48-28 loss at East Stroudsburg after trailing 35-7 at halftime. Both teams started the year 3-0 before dropping back-to-back games.
• The Vulcans suffered a 38-31 loss at nationally-ranked West Chester in a game which featured back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns. Sophomore
James Harris passed for 273 yards on 16-of-31 attempts and accounted for three touchdowns (one rushing) while making his first career start. Midway through the third quarter, junior
Terrell Roberson tied the school record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown before West Chester followed with a 97-yard kickoff return for a score on the ensuing kickoff. Senior defensive back
Dewey McDonald led the team with 10 tackles and added 1.0 TFL.
• The Vulcans and Golden Eagles are meeting for the 84th time this weekend, making Clarion the second-most common opponent for Cal U. The Vulcans have won eight-consecutive and nine of the last 10 meetings.
• After nearly guiding the program to the NCAA Playoffs in 2009,
Jay Foster has posted a 26-56 record in eight seasons with the Golden Eagles. He was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2009 and led the program to a 4-7 mark last season after losing five of its last six games. Foster took the helm at Clarion after serving as the long-time defensive coordinator at Slippery Rock
• Clarion returns 19 starters from a team that finished with a 4-7 mark for the second time in the last three years. The Golden Eagles have used a pair of quarterbacks this season with redshirt freshman
Darelle Carson starting the last three games for injured senior
Ben Fiscus, an All-PSAC West First-Team selection in 2012. As a starter, Carson has completed less than 50 percent (34-of-69) of his passes for over 600 yards and totaled six touchdowns (three rushing). Junior
Bobby Thomas leads the team in rushing with 361 yards, while Carson has totaled 240 yards on 70 attempts. Sophomore wide receiver
Mark Nicholas and junior tight end
Mike Deitrick are tied for the team lead with 15 receptions and have combined for five touchdowns. Clarion returns 10 starters from last year on defense, led by All-PSAC West First-Team defensive lineman
Julian Howsare. As a junior, he ranks third on the team with 33 tackles (19 solo) and is among the league leaders with 8.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks. Sophomore defensive back
Cory McNamara leads the team with 49 tackles (21 solo), while classmate
Kyle McWreath ranks second with 35 stops (10 solo). The Golden Eagles boast one of the most veteran punters in the PSAC in four-year starter
Nathan Conway, who is averaging a career-high 44.4 yards per punt this year. In contrast, Clarion features a true freshman kicker in
Phil Esposito, who has converted all 15 of his PAT attempts and made 5-of-10 field goals.
• Cal U hosts Clarion for Homecoming this weekend at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans have won each of their last eight Homecoming contests, including a 30-0 victory over Lock Haven last season before finishing the year with an 8-3 overall record.
• For the first time since 2004, the Vulcans failed to earn at least a share of the top spot in the preseason PSAC West poll. Cal U was selected fourth in the league poll by the coaches after losing its last two divisional games in 2012. Meanwhile, Clarion was picked to finish sixth in the division after losing five of its final six games last year.
• Against IUP, sophomore
Andrew Cerett recorded the longest punt in NCAA Division II this year at 79 yards. The distance ranks as the sixth-best punt in all NCAA divisions this year and is the longest by a Cal U punter in over a decade. Cerett led the PSAC in punting as a freshman and ranks third in the league this season with a mark of 43.9 yards per punt.
• In last week's game, Cal U and West Chester scored on back-to-back kickoff returns in the third quarter. It marked the first game in over a decade in which two kickoff returns were scored in the same game, much less consecutive kickoffs. West Chester sophomore Brandon Monk became the first player to return a kickoff for a touchdown against the Vulcans since the 2009 NCAA Semifinals.
• Cal U recorded its fourth blocked kick (three field goals, one PAT) of the season last week at West Chester when senior
Jalen Fields blocked a 42-yard field-goal attempt late in the first quarter. It marked the team's third blocked field goal of the year, as the Vulcans blocked a pair of kicks in the season-opener at Hillsdale. The Vulcans totaled six blocked kicks last year and have combined to block 14 kicks since the start of the 2011 season.
• Last week at West Chester, sophomore quarterback
James Harris started his first football game since he was a junior in high school in 2008. He completed 16-of-31 attempts for 273 yards with no interceptions and accounted for three touchdowns (one rushing). A native of Georgia, Harris played in 91 games for the Wake Forest baseball team from 2011-13. He was a first-team all-region quarterback at Etowah High School and led his team to the state playoffs in 2008 before concentrating on baseball his senior year.
• Junior
Terrell Roberson tied the school record for the longest kickoff return at 100 yards last week at West Chester. He tied the mark originally set by
Marc Huddleston against Slippery Rock on Oct. 14, 2006. Roberson and Huddleston are the only Cal U players in the last decade with multiple kick returns for touchdowns in their careers. A product of Penn Hills, Roberson finished last week with five kick returns for 197 yards (39.4 yards per return), the highest single-game total by a Cal U player in over a decade.
• Senior defensive back
Dewey McDonald recorded double-digit tackles for the second time this season last week at West Chester, finishing with 10 stops. He ranks among the PSAC leaders with 43 tackles and is one of only two players in the league to have multiple interception returns for touchdowns. McDonald was a three-year starter at Fairmont State from 2009-11 and played against Clarion three times. He recorded an interception against the Golden Eagles in his college debut and tallied a combined 19 tackles versus Clarion in 2010 and 2011.
• In only two years as a starter, senior linebacker
BJ Stevens has developed into one of the top defensive playmakers in school history. He set the single-season school records for sacks and TFL last year, while leading the country in sacks per game. Stevens broke the all-time school record for sacks earlier this season and enters the weekend ranked second with 35.5 TFL, just 3.5 TFL shy of tying the record set by former teammate Thomas Mulabah.
• Cal U has been held under 100 rushing yards four times in five games this season, averaging just 77.4 yards per game and a scant 2.2 yards per attempt. True freshman
Nick Grissom recorded the team's longest run of the year last week with a 31-yard gain, which more than doubled the previous long. Quarterback
James Harris also scored the team's second rushing touchdown of the year last week after Cal U averaged 18 rushing touchdowns the last three years.
• With his start last week, sophomore
James Harris became the second quarterback to start a game this season for the Vulcans. Cal U has now started multiple signal callers in back-to-back years after using only one starter each year from 2007-11. Last season,
Peter Lalich started the first six games before missing four games due to injury.
• Sophomore wide receiver
Kowan Scott recorded his first career 100-yard game last week at West Chester. He finished with a team-high 118 yards on only four receptions, averaging 29.5 yards per catch. Scott has totaled 213 yards on seven receptions with one touchdown in two games against the Golden Rams. A former state champion hurdler, Scott averages 18.9 yards per catch for his career behind seven receptions of 30-plus yards.
• Last week at West Chester, the Vulcans allowed four sacks in the first half after entering the game with only three sacks allowed on 131 attempts. Cal U has allowed four sacks in a game once in each of the past three seasons.
