CAL U NOTES
• Cal U continues its homestand this weekend when it hosts West Chester. Last weekend, the Vulcans rallied to score nine points in the final minute to earn a 26-24 win over then-No. 14 IUP. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams extended their winning streak to three games with a 45-24 victory at Kutztown.

• The Vulcans rallied to a 26-24 win over IUP in the fourth-annual Coal Bowl following a game-winning, 30-yard field goal by sophomore Cody Nuzzo with 3.5 seconds left. Senior quarterback Peter Lalich passed for the second-highest total in single-game school history, finishing with 438 yards. He completed 27-of-40 attempts with three touchdowns. Lalich connected with junior wide receiver Nadir Brown for an 80-yard touchdown to trim the deficit to 24-23 with 52.3 seconds left. Senior defensive back Rontez Miles led the team with 13 tackles (six solo) and recovered an onside kick to set-up the winning field goal.

• The Vulcans and Golden Rams are meeting for the ninth time this weekend with Cal U winning each of the last four meetings. The teams met four times in less than two calendar years from 2007-09.

• In 10 years as head coach of the Golden Rams, Bill Zwaan has posted a 73-40 record with three PSAC East titles. He helped guide the program to five-consecutive berths to the NCAA Playoffs from 2004-08 with an appearance in the NCAA Semifinals in 2004. Zwaan previously served as head coach for six years at NCAA Division III Widener, leading the Pride to four postseason appearances and consecutive 12-win seasons.

• West Chester returns 15 starters (six offense, seven defense) from a team that finished 5-6 overall, marking a second-straight losing season. Senior quarterback Mike Mattei leads the PSAC in passing efficiency this season after posting 11 touchdowns and one interception. He also ranks fourth in the league with 953 passing yards while completing 65.9 percent (56-of-85) of his attempts. Junior running back Rondell White is a dual-threat for the Golden Rams, ranking fourth in the PSAC in rushing yards and leading the team in receptions. Sophomore wide receiver Erick Brundidge possesses big-play ability, averaging over 23 yards per reception. The Golden Rams enter the weekend with the third-ranked scoring defense in the PSAC, allowing 24.0 points per game. Sophomore linebacker Ronell Williams leads the team and ranks second in the league with 40 tackles (15 solo). He also has registered 4.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, two interceptions and one forced fumble this season. On special teams, West Chester features one of the league's top kickers in junior Shawn Leo, who set the single-season school record with 15 field goals in 2011. He has made all 20 PAT attempts and a 48-yard field goal this year.

• With its third 4-0 start in the last six years, Cal U remained at No. 6 in both the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 polls. The Vulcans have been ranked in the top 10 of the AFCA poll for four-straight weeks.

• The Vulcans have posted three victories over Top 25 opponents in the opening month of the season. Cal U has totaled three or more wins against nationally-ranked teams in a season four times in the last six years with each of the previous three times resulting in appearances in the NCAA Semifinals. Since 2007, the Vulcans have recorded a 17-9 mark against teams ranked in the AFCA Top 25 poll.

• Last season, the Vulcans became the fourth school in PSAC history, and the first since West Chester (2004-08), to reach the NCAA Playoffs in five-straight years. No program in the league has made six-consecutive berths in the NCAA Playoffs and IUP is the only school to have reached the postseason five-straight years on multiple separate occasions.

• In two seasons, senior Peter Lalich has established himself as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in school history. Lalich passed for the second-highest single-game total in school history last week, finishing with a career-high 438 yards. His total ranks only behind the record of 443 passing yards set by Kevin McCabe in the 2008 PSAC Championship against West Chester. Lalich ranks second in the league with 1,433 passing yards through four games after shattering the single-season school record last season.

• In last week's win over IUP, the wide receiver trio of Nadir Brown, Trey Johnson and Mike Williams each eclipsed the 100-yard mark. It marked the first time in recent program history (since 2002) in which three players posted over 100 receiving yards. Williams led all players with a career-high 143 yards and Brown finished with 128 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown with 52.3 seconds remaining. Johnson was named the Coal Bowl MVP after posting 120 yards, highlighted by a 20-yard reception to set-up the game-winning field goal.

• Head coach Mike Kellar joins Earle Bruce (1946) and John Luckhardt (2002) as the only head coaches since World War II to start their coaching careers at Cal U with a 4-0 record. Bruce posted a 27-6 mark in four years behind the first undefeated season in school history in 1946. Luckhardt, who retired in June, posted a 6-5 record in his first year with the program before becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history with 88 victories.

• This weekend's game will feature two of the most versatile running backs in the PSAC in Cal U senior Lamont Smith and West Chester junior Rondell White. Smith, a two-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection, has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons and has made over 60 receptions in his career. White led the Golden Rams in rushing last year and ranks fourth in the league with 468 rushing yards in 2012. He also has made 60-plus receptions in his career, including a team-leading 14 catches this season.

• Former defensive back Tommie Campbell scored his second career NFL touchdown on special teams last Sunday. He received a lateral on a first-quarter punt return and scampered 65 yards for a touchdown, as the Tennessee Titans won in overtime against Detroit. As a rookie last year, Campbell scored following a reverse on a kickoff return against Tampa Bay in November.

• The Vulcans registered their second blocked kick of the season in the fourth quarter against IUP. Sophomore Jeff Knox, Jr. blocked a 20-yard field goal by the Crimson Hawks to preserve a 17-10 lead. Over the last eight years, the Vulcans have posted 33 blocked kicks despite tallying only one in both 2008 and 2010. In the last meeting between Cal U and West Chester, Rontez Miles blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown.

• Just moments after missing a game-tying PAT attempt last week, sophomore kicker Cody Nuzzo made the game-winning 30-yard field goal against IUP with 3.5 seconds left. It marked the first game-winning field goal by Cal U since Marc Domonkos made a 17-yard field goal in overtime - against IUP - on Oct. 30, 2010. Nuzzo has converted 10-of-20 field goal attempts in his career, including four-of-five this year, and made 59-of-67 PAT attempts.

• In the last 10 seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 24-5 record (.828) against PSAC East opponents. Cal U has won all four meetings against West Chester during that span, including two victories during the 2008 season - both at Adamson Stadium. That year, the Vulcans opened the season with a 44-32 win over the Golden Rams before capturing the PSAC Championship with a 47-36 victory in November.

• Junior Mike Williams is just the third wide receiver in recent program history to record three-consecutive 100-yard games. Former All-Americans A.J. Jackson (2009) and Thomas Mayo (2011) previously accomplished the feat with neither stretching the streak to four games.

• In last week's win, the Vulcans were out-gained on the ground by a 284-28 margin. Cal U was held to its lowest single-game rushing total since managing just nine yards in a loss at Shippensburg on Nov. 15, 2003. In contrast, the Vulcans allowed the most rushing yards in a game since the 2009 NCAA Playoffs when Northwest Missouri State totaled 306 yards on the ground. Crimson Hawks' running back Harvie Tuck also became the first player in recent program history (since 2002) to amass over 250 rushing yards and 40 attempts against the Vulcans.
