CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium for Homecoming this weekend after earning a 41-22 victory at Clarion last Saturday. Meanwhile, Lock Haven suffered a 19-10 loss at Mercyhurst last week after trailing by just three points midway through the fourth quarter.
• Cal U scored touchdowns on five-straight drives in the first half en route to a 41-22 victory at Clarion. Senior quarterback
Peter Lalich posted his fifth-straight 300-yard game, finishing with 368 yards and three touchdowns - all in the first half. Junior wide receivers
Trey Johnson and
Mike Williams both registered 100-yard games against the Golden Eagles with Johnson surpassing the 100-yard mark for the third-straight week. Senior linebacker
Brett Diamond led the defense with nine tackles (three solo), including 1.0 TFL, and senior defensive back
Rontez Miles posted eight stops (four solo) and one interception.
• The Vulcans and Bald Eagles are meeting for the 69th time this weekend. Cal U has won eight-straight and 10 of the last 12 meetings against Lock Haven, including a 54-13 victory last year.
• After serving as an assistant coach with the Bald Eagles for eight years,
John Allen is in his second season as head coach at Lock Haven. He recently served as the coordinator of player development at Penn State from 2008-11 after serving as head coach of the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe in 2007. In his initial stop at Lock Haven, Allen served as both a position coach and coordinator.
• Lock Haven enters this weekend on a 48-game losing streak with its last win coming in the final game of the 2007 season. The Bald Eagles rank last in the PSAC in scoring offense after being shutout in the first three games this season. Junior
Brandon Brader returns after earning All-PSAC West Second-Team honors while nearly rushing for 1,000 yards last season. He leads the team with 315 rushing yards this year, while also ranking second on the team with 11 receptions. Senior quarterback
Jarrett Kratzer, who has made 19 career starts, has passed for 765 yards this season while completing 52.1 percent of his attempts. Defensively, Lock Haven is allowing 38.5 points and 431.0 yards of total offense per game. Sophomore safety
George Christas leads the team with 42 tackles (22 solo) and senior linebacker
James Goins ranks second with 37 stops (22 solo), 4.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks. A freshman, linebacker
Tashawn Bunch has posted a team-high 5.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks, while ranking third on the team with 35 tackles (19 solo). On special teams, freshman
Bryce Stambaugh is averaging 33.9 yards per punt with two punts of 50-plus yards.
• With its win last week, Cal U moved up to Nos. 15 and 13 in the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 polls, respectively. The Vulcans have been ranked in the AFCA poll for 11-consecutive weeks and the D2Football.com poll every week since Oct. 12, 2009.
• Cal U hosts Lock Haven for Homecoming this weekend at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans have won each of their last seven Homecoming contests en route to a divisional title each year. Last season, Cal U posted a 32-26 overtime victory over Mercyhurst on Homecoming before finishing the year with a 10-3 overall record.
• Junior wide receivers
Trey Johnson and
Mike Williams both each eclipsed the 100-yard mark last weekend at Clarion. It marked the second time this season in which multiple players posted over 100 receiving yards. Prior to this year, the last time two players surpassed the 100-yard plateau in the same game was in the 2009 NCAA Semifinals (
AJ Jackson,
Terrance Moore). Williams has surpassed the century mark four times in the last five games, while Johnson has three-straight 100-yard games.
• Senior running back
Lamont Smith has surpassed the 100-yard mark against Lock Haven in each of the last two years. He has totaled 247 rushing yards and six touchdowns on just 30 carries (8.2 yards per attempt) in two career games against the Bald Eagles. Smith, who set a career high with four rushing touchdowns in 2010 against Lock Haven, leads the team with 424 rushing yards this season.
• Senior quarterback
Peter Lalich currently leads the PSAC and ranks second in NCAA Division II with 2,143 passing yards this season. He has thrown for at least 300 yards in five-consecutive games, including 368 yards last week at Clarion, and the Vulcans have posted a 7-2 record over the last two years when Lalich has surpassed the 300-yard mark. Despite playing just two seasons, he ranks in the top 20 among active quarterbacks in NCAA Division II with 5,868 passing yards and 48 touchdowns.
• Last season, the Vulcans became the fourth school in PSAC history, and the first since West Chester (2004-08), to reach the NCAA Playoffs in five-straight years. No program in the league has made six-consecutive berths in the NCAA Playoffs and IUP is the only school to have reached the postseason five-straight years on multiple separate occasions.
• Cal U has been flagged only 11 times in the last three games after being whistled for 35 penalties in the first three weeks. The Vulcans were whistled for just two penalties in the loss against West Chester, marking the fewest penalties in a game since 2009. Cal U is tied for fourth in the PSAC with 46 penalties, while Lock Haven has been penalized 37 times this year.
• Senior defensive back
Rontez Miles, who was featured on the preseason Senior Bowl Watch List, currently leads the team with 54 tackles (27 solo) and three interceptions this year. He has registered at least one interception in each of the last two games and has made 33 tackles (15 solo) over the last three weeks. A First-Team All-American in 2011, Miles has made 26-consecutive starts and ranks fifth in school history with 236 career tackles (140 solo).
• In last week's victory at Clarion, the Vulcans allowed over 400 passing yards in a game for the first time in recent program history. Golden Eagles' quarterback
Ben Fiscus shattered his career high with 410 passing yards, which was nearly 250 yards more than his season average, and completed 36-of-64 attempts. He also became the first quarterback to record over 60 pass attempts in a game against Cal U in recent program history.
• A two-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection, senior tight end
Blake Williamson has made at least one reception in 14-consecutive games. He ranks third on the team this year with 22 receptions for 200 yards with one touchdown. Williamson is tied for first on the team with 39 career starts after starting the last 16 games.
• Cal U scored touchdowns on five-consecutive possessions to start the game last weekend at Clarion. It marked the second time in recent program history that the Vulcans opened a game with five-straight touchdowns, as the only other occurrence was against Lock Haven in 2006. Of the five scoring drives last week, the longest Cal U drive lasted nine plays and took less than five minutes.
• Lock Haven enters the weekend with the longest active losing streak in college football at 48 games. With their loss in Week 5 this year, the Bald Eagles broke the all-time NCAA Division II record for consecutive losses (46) that was formerly held by Minnesota Morris (1998-03). The nine-point loss to Mercyhurst last week marks the slimmest losing margin of the year for Lock Haven, who suffered a 21-20 loss to Millersville in last year's season-opener.
• Freshman punter
Andrew Cerett currently leads the PSAC and is tied for ninth in NCAA Division II with an average of 43.0 yards per punt. He has placed eight of his 24 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line and has recorded three punts of at least 50 yards. Last year, the Vulcans averaged 36.9 yards per punt which was their lowest season average since 2006.
• The Cal U offensive line has yielded just five sacks on 250 passing attempts through the first six games this year.
