ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 9) – Senior quarterback Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif./William H. Taft/Maryland) passed for a season-high 328 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania football team remained undefeated with a 34-7 victory at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league action this season. Cal U has now won 23-consecutive road games in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights drop to 3-3 this year with 1-2 mark in divisional action.

Portis finished the game with his fourth career 300-yard performance, completing 24-of-34 attempts with no interceptions. With his three scores, he passed Jeff Petrucci for third all-time in school history with 50 touchdown passes. Portis also tied his career high with 24 completions and totaled 35 rushing yards on six carries. In the first half against the Golden Knights, the 6-4 quarterback threw for 215 yards and two scores while completing 15-of-23 passes.

The 5-10 running back finished with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, marking his fifth-straight 100-yard game. Smith also established season highs with seven receptions and 96 yards, both marks led the team.

For the third-straight game, the Vulcans' defense limited an opponent to single digits. Cal U forced Gannon into season lows with 35 rushing yards, 126 yards of total offense and eight first downs. As a unit, the Vulcans finished with six sacks after entering the weekend with a PSAC-high 18 sacks.

After the Vulcans scored on a 26-yard field goal by senior kicker Marc Domonkos (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort/Lock Haven) on the game's opening possession, the Golden Knights took a 7-3 lead on a 61-yard touchdown pass from senior Zach Boedicker to classmate Geoff Hicks on their first offensive play of the game.

Cal U countered with another scoring drive when Portis connected with sophomore tight end Blake Williamson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) for a nine-yard strike. Early in the second quarter, the Vulcans moved the ball inside the five-yard line before turning it over on downs. Cal U later expanded its lead to 13-7 when Domonkos made a 30-yard field with 7:26 remaining in the half. In their final drive of the second quarter, the Vulcans marched 59 yards before Portis found junior wide receiver Derrick Jones (Lynwood, Calif./Long Beach Poly/Oregon) on a 12-yard touchdown.

The Cal U defense was suffocating in the first half, holding Gannon to only three first downs (one penalty, one touchdown) and 80 yards of total offense, including the 61-yard score. The Golden Knights were also forced into negative rushing yards after the Vulcans recorded 7.0 tackles for loss (TFL) in the first half.
