CALIFORNIA (Dec. 17) – Juniors
Luka Andjusic (Belgrade, Serbia/Borislav Petrov Braca) and
Jay Tucker (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy at Palumbo) both scored 19 points off the bench to pace six players in double-digits, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team rolled to a 102-63 victory against NAIA-member Carlow at Hamer Hall on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 3-8 this season and snap a seven-game losing streak that dated back to Nov. 18. Cal U has now scored over 100 points multiple times in a season for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. Meanwhile, the Celtics fall to 3-11 overall while playing their fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent.
Tucker recorded his first career double-double on Saturday, as he finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He shot 7-of-10 from the floor and made five-of-six from the free-throw line while playing 26 minutes against the Celtics.
Andjusic scored a season-high 19 points after going 7-of-11 from the floor, including four-of-eight from beyond the arc. He also tallied three rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes off the bench. Andjusic has scored in double-digits four times over the last eight games while ranking second on the team in scoring at 9.9 points per game.
Junior
Cordell Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) finished with 16 points behind four-of-six from long range and added five assists and four steals, while classmate
Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) posted 15 points, four rebounds and three assists. Fellow junior
Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) registered his second double-double in the last four games, as he totaled 11 points and 12 rebounds (eight offensive), plus four blocks. Junior
Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) posted 10 points and three assists, while classmate
Robel Teckle (Washington, D.C./Friendship Collegiate Academy) finished with eight points and six rebounds in the win.
The teams traded points for the opening eight minutes of the game before Cal U scored six-straight points to take a 15-11 lead on a layup by Richardson with 10:28 left in the first half. The Celtics countered with six-unanswered points to reclaim the lead at 17-15 with 7:50 left before the break. The Vulcans responded with a 12-0 run in just under two minutes to take a 27-17 lead at the 5:59-mark. Cal U and Carlow traded points for the next four-plus minutes before the Vulcans closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 44-27 lead at the break.
The Vulcans mounted an 11-2 rally early in the second half to stretch their lead to 55-31 on a layup by Smith with 16:54 remaining. Cal U later posted an 11-5 run over three-plus minutes to extend its lead to 77-47 with 10:12 left to play after back-to-back baskets by Andjusic. The Vulcans ended the game on an 11-2 rally to extend their lead to as many as 39 points, 102-63, on a pair of free-throws by Tucker with 32 seconds remaining.
Cal U finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (40-of-80) from the floor, including 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Vulcans made a season-high 14 three-pointers on Saturday, which are the most in a game since also converting 14 treys against Penn State-Fayette on Nov. 21, 2006. Meanwhile, the Celtics shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field after going 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from long range. Cal U out-rebounded Carlow by a 49-30 margin and scored 36 points off turnovers on Saturday.
Junior Charlie Scharbo led the Celtics with 17 points after going seven-of-nine from the floor. He also posted nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Classmate Miles Sunder finished with 10 points and four rebounds in the loss.
Cal U opens PSAC West play in nearly two weeks when it travels to face Edinboro on Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
