Vulcans finish No. 20 at championships

HERSHEY, Pa. (May 22) – Behind a six-over 77 from junior Adam Jeffery (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) on Wednesday afternoon, the Vulcans finished No. 20 in the team standings at the NCAA National Championships hosted at Hershey Country Club (East Course).

The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team carded a 30-over 314 in the third round to finish the tournament with a 99-over 951 (325-312-314). Florida Southern moved into first place after shooting the best round of the tournament at four-under 280 and won the stroke portion of the tournament at 15-over 867 (294-293-280). Barry (Fla.), which led after the first and second rounds, dropped to second place at 24-over 876 (284-288-304) and defending-National Champion Nova Southeastern (Fla.) moved to third overall at 25-over 877 (292-290-295). The top-eight teams in the standings after the third round advance to match-play scoring with the National Championship on Friday, May 24.

Jeffery posted a six-over 77 (40-37) on Wednesday to finish tied for 83rd overall with a 21-over 234 (78-79-77). He was at two-over through seven holes in the third round and following a double-bogey he played the next 10 holes at two-over. Jeffery was the team's top finisher in four of the last five events, highlighted by a third-place showing two weeks ago at the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships.

Sophomore Jordan Eck (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and senior Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa./South Side) both finished in a tie for 95th place at 26-over 239 after each carded a seven-over 78 in the third round. Eck (82-79-78) played the first seven holes at one-over and after making the turn he played the next five holes at one-under, including a birdie on the par-five 14th. Newbauer (85-76-78) tallied a stretch of seven-straight pars and finished with par on 13 holes in the final round. The lone senior competing at the event, he shot a combined 12-over in the last two rounds after opening the tournament with a 14-over on Monday.

Sophomore Charlie Durman (London, England/Heritage Academy) shot an 11-over 82 (39-43) in the third round after playing the front nine at three-over to place 98th overall at 27-over 240 (80-78-82). Freshman Brad Thornton (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) registered a 10-over 81 (41-40) with 11 pars on Wednesday  and combined for an 18-over 160 (79-81) in the last two days following a first-round disqualification.

Junior Tim Crouch of Florida Southern earned the individual national crown following a two-hole, sudden death playoff. He finished 54 holes in a three-way tie for first place on the leader board with a two-under 211 after entering Wednesday tied for sixth overall

Cal U made its first appearance at the NCAA National Championships since 1983.
