Kowalski selected to academic at-large team

CALIFORNIA (May 20) – California University of Pennsylvania junior Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Women's At-Large Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced the organization on Thursday.

This marks the second-straight season in which a Vulcan tennis standout received the academic honor, as former All-American Helena VanEysendeyk earned second-team laurels last year. The women's at-large teams consist of all sports except baseball, cross country, soccer, softball, track & field and volleyball.

Kowalski posted a 16-13 record in singles play while competing at four different positions, including an 8-0 mark at fourth singles. Playing with four different doubles partners, she also finished with a 25-10 mark in doubles action and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship doubles team during the Fall 2009 season.

A native of Germany, Kowalski is a three-time All-PSAC West selection as a doubles player. In the latest ITA regional rankings (May 4), she and freshman Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany/Lother-Meyer Gymnasium) are the top doubles team in the Atlantic Region. The PSAC West Rookie of the Year, Kowalski is also ranked seventh in the region as a singles player.

Kowalski currently holds a 3.62 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while pursing a degree in business administration. In addition to the academic honor by CoSIDA, she is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and three-time member of the Cal U AD Honor Roll.

To qualify for the academic all-district honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

The district consists of all colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and District of Columbia that are not affiliated with NCAA Division II.
