Cal U competes at Red Flash Open

LORETTO, Pa. (April 25) – Juniors Frank Ehrensberger (Saint Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and Nate Payne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) improved upon their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying marks on Saturday, as the Vulcans competed at the Saint Francis (Pa.) Red Flash Open.

Ehrensberger finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.89 seconds. He improved his season-best time by over four-tenths of a second and now ranks second in 400 meters within the PSAC.

Payne placed third in long jump with a leap of 6.96 meters, which ranks second in the conference. His previous season-best mark of 6.77 meters ranked seventh in the PSAC.

The Cal U 4x400-meter relay of freshman Mike Donovan (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), sophomore Nick Messina (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale), senior Tony Morinello (Plum, Pa./Plum) and freshman Alex Smith (South Park, Pa./South Park) crossed the finish line in 3 minutes, 26.40 seconds to place third.

Individually, Smith qualified for the PSAC Championship in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 50.17 seconds.

The 4x100-meter relay of junior Dennis Cole (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Ehrensberger, junior Terrence Johnson (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) and freshman Vince Wilson (Bear, Del./Middletown) finished fifth with a time of 42.95 seconds.

Cole and Johnson posted back-to-back finishes in the 100-meter dash. Cole finished sixth overall in 11.17 seconds, while Johnson posted a time of 11.19 seconds.

Freshman Tim Lahmers (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) ran a season-best time of 16:24.02 in the 5,000-meter run to finish sixth overall. Classmate Zach Sykes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) also finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:07.3.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Morinello established a season best with a time of 56.83 seconds to finish eighth in the event.

The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, May 7, when they begin competition at the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Millersville, Pa.
