Christopher Clark (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) and freshman
Alex Smith (South Park, Pa./South Park) combined for three victories on Saturday, as the Vulcans finished sixth at the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational, hosted by Robert Morris University.
Clark won both the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs at the event. In the 1,500 meters, he crossed the finish line in four minutes, 5.32 seconds to win the even by almost eight seconds. Clark then ran a time of 16:01.67 to win the 5,000 meters.
Smith won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.03, while sophomore
Tony Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) finished fourth in the event in 2:02.59.
Freshman
Ryan Schleicher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 56.67 meters (185-11 feet), the best mark by any Division II thrower in the event. Classmate
Zach Knight (North East, Pa./North East) finished fourth in the javelin with a heave of 49.02 meters (160-10).
In the 400-meter run, sophomore
Nick Messina (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) crossed the finish line in 52.49 seconds to finish fifth overall.
The host Colonials won the eight-team event with 142 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon University (138) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (103).
The Vulcans resume competition at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Multi-Event and Ed Fry Invitational, beginning Thursday, April 16.
