Cal U competes at Penn State Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Jan. 17) – In its first action in over a month, the Vulcans competed at the 17-team Penn State Open on Saturday, hosted at the Ashenfelter Indoor Track. The event hosted by the Nittany Lions featured over a dozen Division I programs, along with PSAC-rivals Indiana University of Pennsyvlania and Lock Haven University.

Junior Frank Ehrensberger (Saint Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) posted a pair of top-15 finishes for the California University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team. Ehrensberger finished 13th overall and first among non-Division I runners in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 22.55 seconds. The junior then ran a time of 50.13 seconds in the 400-meter dash to finish 13th overall and second among non-Division I runners.

In the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, junior Dennis Cole (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) ran a time of 7.11 seconds to finish tied for 13th overall and first among non-Division I runners. Classmate Terrence Johnson (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills), an All-America cornerback on the Cal U football team, finished second among non-Division I runners with a time of 7.17 seconds.

The Vulcans also posted the best non-Division I time in the 4-x-400 meter relay. The relay team of sophomore Nick Messina (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale), freshman Vince Wilson (Bear, Pa.), Ehrensberger and sophomore Rickie Watson (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) crossed the finish line in 3 minutes, 26.54 seconds to place 15th overall.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, Jan. 23, when it travels to Berea, Ohio for the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Meet.
