KENT, Ohio (Dec. 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team opened its season at the 2008 Golden Flash Gala, hosted by Kent State University on Friday and Saturday.
Sophomore
Jordan Boatwright (York, Pa./Milton Hershey) paced the Vulcans with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. The 5-11 sophomore posted the top distance of any non-Division I competitor with a leap of 45.24 feet (13.88 meters). Boatwright also finished seventh overall in the high jump with a mark of 6.27 feet (1.91 meters).
Sophomore
Ben Way (Bedford, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) also added a top-10 finish in the high jump with a height of 5.94 feet (1.81 meters). In the first day of the invitational, Way posted a leap of 19.52 feet (5.95 meters) in the long jump.
Cal U also posted a strong finish in the 4x400-meter relay, placing fourth with a time of 3 minutes, 33.27 seconds. The relay team featured freshman
Vince Wilson (Bear, Pa.), Alex Smith, sophomore
Nick Messina (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) and freshman
Joseph Adams (Upper Marlboro, Pa.).
Wilson also competed in the 200-meter dash (23.71 seconds) and 400-meter dash (51.73 seconds).
Senior
Anthony Freer (New Castle, Pa.) led the Vulcan throwers with a heave of 47.44 feet (14.46 meters) in the weight throw at the Golden Flash Gala.
Cal U returns to action after the holiday break on Friday, Jan. 16, at the Slippery Rock University Indoor Invitational.
