As a two-sport star athlete from 1960 through 1964, Walt "Rocky" Sigut impressed baseball and basketball fans alike. During Sigut's term as a four-year starter in baseball for the Vulcans, his heavy bat echoed over the field with a .401 career average. No other player in Cal history has accomplished such a feat over four years.
With a 13-2 regular season record, the 1962 Vulcans moved into the NAIA playoffs held in Missouri. It was here that Sigut's hitting ability enabled California to place fourth out of the country's top eight outstanding small college baseball teams. In addition, this heavy hitter helped the 1962 and 1963 squads obtain the NAIA District 30 title both seasons.
As well as being a force at the plate, Sigut controlled the boards at both ends of the basketball court. As a senior he averaged 11 rebounds per game, shot 53% from the floor and a remarkable 83% from the foul line. These outstanding statistics enabled Sigut to place among the top 20 in the combined totals category for players from small colleges. Sigut displayed his foul-shooting expertise in a nail-biting victory over the St. Vincent Bearcats by dropping two through the hoop with 20 seconds left to play. His nerves of steel and foul-line accuracy helped the Vulcans win 101-100.
Since graduating in 1964 with a degree in publicspeaking, he went on to complete a master's degree in counseling and guidance. Sigut is originally from Rillton, PA, and a graduate of Sewickley Area High School. Professionally, Sigut worked as a teacher, guidance counselor, and school psychologist. He lives in Uniontown with his wife, Mara Jo, and they have two sons and a daughter. Sigut also maintains a private practice as a licensed psychologist.
