A two-time ITA National Coach of the Year, Pablo Montana guided the women’s tennis program to unprecedented success while head coach from 2002-16. He led the Vulcans to 10-consecutive PSAC Championships from 2007-16 and the program advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament seven times while making 13 tournament appearances.
Montana posted a 276-83 record in dual matches for a staggering .769 winning percentage behind six-consecutive seasons of at least 20 wins. He was tabbed the PSAC West Coach of the Year eight times in a span of 12 seasons and mentored eight-straight PSAC West Athlete of the Year selections, including Hall of Famers Inga Chilingaryan and Helena Van Eysendeyk. In 2007, the Vulcans set a school record with 28 victories, captured their first PSAC Championship in nearly 15 years and made their first-ever appearance in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The following year, Chilingaryan and Van Eysendeyk finished as the No. 2 doubles team in the country while the program finished with 26 wins. Following the 2009 campaign, Van Eysendeyk was named the ITA National Senior Player of the Year and finished as the No. 2 singles player in NCAA Division II. Montana received ITA National Coach of the Year honors for the second time in 2010, as the program advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and won a fourth-consecutive league title. The Vulcans later featured an ITA All-American doubles team in three-straight years from 2012-14 with standouts Martina Rubesova and Lucie Sipkova each being named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year during that span. Rubesova and Franziska Steinhardt, the program’s first Academic All-American, ranked as the No. 5 doubles team in 2012. Under Montana, the Vulcans posted an unblemished 71-0 record in league play from 2007-16. In addition to the success on the court, the program received ITA All-Academic Team status for 13-consecutive seasons and featured the regional recipient of the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award twice in four years with Alyssa Savill earning the national honor in 2016.
Montana completed a master’s degree in geography and regional planning in 2004. He departed from the Vulcans following the 2015-16 campaign and is currently the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at the University of Delaware – a NCAA Division I program in the Colonial Athletic Association.
