Mitch Bailey was a four-sport star at California in the late 1940's and 1950's, excelling in football, baseball, basketball, and tennis. He was an All-American/All-State two-way football player who caught 25 passes for 411 yards in 1951 while helping the Vulcans complete a 7-2 overall record and advance to the Pythian Bowl, which was held at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Cal lost by a scant 13-7 margin to heavily favored Lenoir-Rhyne; Bailey thwarted two Bear scoring drives with a pair of interceptions and received special honors after the game. Cal football compiled an impressive 21-standout infielder in baseball as well as one of Cal's top players in both tennis and basketball.

Bailey went on to coach the Vulcan baseball team for 20 years (1960-1979), compiling a 282-205 cumulative record with 16 winning seasons, 12 post-season appearances, a PSAC championship and an impressive 96% graduation rate. Bailey was also an assistant Vulcan football coach under both Ted Nemeth and Elmo Natali. Bailey, who has been an associate professor in Cal's Biology Department for the past 36 years, is originally from Roscoe, Pa, and a graduate of California High School. He now resides in South Union, Pa, with his son, Mitchell, Jr.
