Lloyd Gilmore didn’t travel far from home following his graduation from Vernon High School (North Belle Vernon) in 1951. Gilmore found himself in the warm and friendly confines of Herron Gymnasium playing basketball for the Vulcans and Coach Gene Hester.

Gilmore, who played football and basketball at Vernon High School, singled out basketball at Cal and found himself in the starting lineup midway through his freshman year and never gave up his starting role. During his freshman season he scored 127 points enroute to a stellar career. He is one of the members of Cal’s 1,000 Point Club having scored 1051 for his career. During his four years, Lloyd scored twenty or more points in a game more than twenty times and he did so prior to the three-point shot.

Lloyd was an All-PSAC selection in his sophomore and junior years and a First Team selection his senior year as he averaged 23.9 ppg in conference play. In four years he averaged 17 points per game.

Former teammate and Cal U Hall of Famer Dick Majernick characterizes Lloyd by stating that “Lloyd was an outstanding point guard and team leader. He led the team in assists and steals.”

After college, Gilmore played basketball at Ft. Jackson. The team’s only loss in the 1957-58 season was in the Third Army championship game.

Gilmore began his teaching and coaching (basketball) career at Trinity High School in Washington, PA. He moved to Aberdeen, MD, and taught history for two years and then transferred to the Baltimore County District where he served as the Speech and Language Supervisor in the Special Education Department. He and his wife Drauga, reside in Maryland.
