A dominant forward on back-to-back NCAA Regional Championship teams, Kayla Smith was originally from Elkins, West Virginia, and is a graduate of Elkins High School. She was a four-year starting forward from 2007-11 and was named a WBCA All-American as a senior after receiving WBCA All-America Honorable Mention the previous two seasons.
Smith is one of two players in school history to receive All-PSAC West First-Team laurels four times in a career and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year in 2011. Following a medical redshirt, she was chosen the 2008 PSAC West Freshman of the Year and helped the Vulcans claim the NCAA regional tittle after advancing to the PSAC Championship. In the 2008-09 season, Smith ranked among the top 10 in the league in both scoring and rebounding while Cal U repeated as regional champions and advanced to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in school history. The Vulcans finished the year ranked No. 4 in the country following a 29-win season. As a junior, she averaged a double-double with 15.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game while playing for her third different head coach. Smith led the PSAC and ranked fourth in the country in rebounding while posting 25 double-doubles. In the 2010-11 season, she led the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game and finished third in the nation with 12.4 rebounds per game. Smith is one of just eight players in PSAC history with 2,000 points and 1,000 points in a career. She holds the all-time school record with 1,307 rebounds and ranks third with 2,096 points. Smith played over 4,000 minutes in her career and helped the Vulcans advance to four-straight PSAC Championships.
Smith earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2010 and completed her master’s degree in performance enhancement and injury prevention in 2011. She played professionally overseas before serving as an assistant coach at Kutztown. Smith currently is the owner and coach at OPEX Morgantown and works as a trainer helping people with individualized exercise, nutrition and lifestyle plans.
