The first men’s soccer goalkeeper to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, Derek Yobbi was a cornerstone at California from 2007–10. A model of consistency and durability, he ranked among the top goalkeepers in the league while anchoring one of the most successful stretches in program history. Yobbi helped the Vulcans capture the first PSAC Championship in program history in 2008 followed by an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Yobbi made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2007, as he earned PSAC Rookie of the Year and All-PSAC First-Team honors. He also garnered NSCAA second-team all-region recognition after starting 15 games. Yobbi ranked among the league leaders with a 1.17 goals-against average and a .778 save percentage, as he finished with 63 total saves. His GAA remains among the top single-season marks in school history.
As a sophomore, Yobbi helped guide the Vulcans to a historic 2008 campaign, highlighted by the program’s only PSAC Championship. Cal finished 13-8-2 overall and claimed the top seed in the PSAC West. Yobbi started 20 games and posted a 1.14 GAA, the fourth-best mark in school history. His play was instrumental throughout the post-season run, as he was named PSAC Tournament MVP. Yobbi recorded six saves in a shutout victory at Slippery Rock in the regular-season finale to secure the top seed in the division. In the PSAC Tournament, he made several stops in a semifinal win over nationally-ranked Slippery Rock before recording five saves in a 3-2 victory at No. 5 Millersville in the PSAC Championship. The title secured just the second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Yobbi earned All-PSAC West First-Team honors as a junior in 2009. He finished with a 1.58 GAA, 56 saves, and a .727 save percentage. The following year, Yobbi delivered his best statistical season and received All-PSAC Second-Team recognition. He played every minute in net and finished with an 11-5-2 record, a 0.91 GAA and a career-high 70 saves. He led the PSAC with nine shutouts, while his GAA still ranks second in single-season school history. The Vulcans posted a 6-0-2 mark at home, including a victory over eventual-WVIAC Champion and national-powerhouse Charleston (WV).
Yobbi concluded his career ranked second in school history with a 1.17 GAA, while setting the school record with 5,916 minutes played and totaling 38 career wins. Following his career, he signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League (USL).
Yobbi graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting. He becomes the second player from the 2008 PSAC Championship team to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
