Cal U’s extraordinary men’s basketball program has won nine PSAC-West titles over the past 14 years and the “Go-To Guy” behind the Vulcans first two of these division titles was sharp-shooting Dana Zajicek.
A transfer from CCAC-Allegheny, Zajicek was Cal’s leading scorer during both the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons.
The Vulcans were coming off a 7-19 season in 1985-86 and Zajicek helped Jim Boone’s first of 10 Cal squads win the school’s first PSAC-West regular season title in 17 years. The Vulcans advanced to their fourth PSAC championship game in school history after a memorable 86-84 PSAC semifinal win over nationally ranked Lock Haven and narrowly lost at top-ranked Millersville in the 1987 PSAC “State Game” where Zajicek netted 29 points. Along with his 21.3 points per game average, Zajicek, the only unanimous All-PSAC-West selection, led the Vulcans in fieldgoals (204), three-point fieldgoals (56), and foul shooting (80.6%).
For an encore, Zajicek and the 1987-88 Vulcans would produce the greatest season in school history to that point. With an unstoppable guard tandem of Zajicek and Darryl Norfleet, Cal rolled to a 25-6 overall record, won a second straight PSAC-West title (11-1), and hosted and defeated Cheyney (117-91) and Kutztown (73-64) in the PSAC Final Four tournament. The Vulcans made their second NCAA tourney appearance ever and advanced to the East Regional finals. Cal finished the season ranked 10th nationally.
Zajicek averaged 21.7 points a game and led the PSAC in three-pointers with 75. At season’s end, Zajicek was selected as the 1988 PSAC-West Player of the Year as well as earning All-ECAC honors and All-American honors by Off The Glass magazine.
His 672 and 576 single-season point marks still rank II and III respectively in school history. His amazing 1,248 career points in just two years still ranks 15th on the school’s prestigious 1,000-point club. A model of scoring consistency, Zajicek was Cal’s leading scorer 32 times out of 60 total games.
Originally from Carnegie, PA, and a graduate of Carlynton High School, where he was a two-time all-section performer and 1,000-point scorer, Zajicek is now a sales representative with Marketing Specialists, a national food brokerage.
Zajicek and his wife, Kelly Konick-Zajicek´89, reside in Roscoe with their children Dani, 7, and two-year old Casey. Dana is the son of Joseph and Lorraine Zajicek.
