One of the all-time leading scorers in school history, Cliff Mitchell was a standout player for California from 1982-86. He ranks sixth all-time in school history with 1,662 points while averaging over 15 points in 108 career games. Mitchell earned All-PSAC West First-Team honors three times while helping the Vulcans capture the 1985 PSAC Championship.

Mitchell aided the program in posting a seven-win improvement as a sophomore while ranking second on the team with 12.5 points per game during the 1983-84 campaign. Cal finished with a 19-10 overall record to mark its winningest season in nearly 15 years. Additionally, the Vulcans appeared in the PSAC Tournament for the first time in the 1980s after tying for third in the league standings. As a junior, Mitchell scored a career-high 583 points and averaged 19.4 points per game, second-best on the team. Cal again made the PSAC Tournament and earned a 67-65 victory over Indiana in the quarterfinals before posting a 78-65 win in the semifinals against Clarion. Led by head coach Tim Loomis, the Vulcans captured the PSAC Championship with an 81-79 victory over Millersville after the Marauders went undefeated in league play. Cal finished the year with a 17-11 record after making the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament with losses to Philadelphia Textiles & Sciences and host Millersville. Mitchell and Michael Wilson combined to score over 1,100 points in 1985, as Cal won its first league title in 15 years. The pair also held the distinction of being the first players in program history to earn All-PSAC West First-Team honors three times in a career – a feat only accomplished once since. As a senior, Mitchell led the team with 18.9 points per game while shooting over 48 percent from the floor.

Mitchell passed away in September 2016 at the age of 52.
